How to un-stretch boot splash animation for widescreen

I'm working on a custom boot animation. I've done it before, and I remember it being stretched when applied because I create the image in a 1:1 ratio (200px by 200px), then I think it's set to be a 4:3 ratio and tries to display it on my 16:9 ratio monitor.

What can I do to unscrew this situation? Do I have to math it to compensate and crunch up the original image so it looks normal when stretched (though I get the feeling that will result in pixellation) or is there a smarter solution?
