What about installing a host image as virtual?Has anyone done it,what s the proper way doin it?Already installed two VMs (XP and 7),but the real benefit would be to somehow install the actual OS that someone uses with all settings, tweaks and hacks so to keep fiddle around safely.Anybody thought of and done it?

Hi,

Do you mean run the host OS as a VM on the host OS? I'm not sure its even possible, but at any rate, assuming its Windows 7, you would require a second validated Windows 7 installation to do that.

You can use a tool like vmware converter to convert your physical machine into a virtual machine. It's called P2V. Physical to virtual.

I ll try to be specific in order to be understood.Iam running windows 7 ultimate with a lot of registry tweaks, disabled services and a bunch of helpfull vbs scripts, its a totally "personalized" personal computer just as everybodys pc.I want this specific "per per com" to run in a virtual environment,so that i can keep on fidelling with it.I know there are disk images or restore points for safety and of course i have my backups. The point is,can it be done and how?If there are no other suggestions,i am going for this P2V as suggested and let everybody know how it went.

P2V openned a new search platform for my quest and i can proudly announce that i made it happen. My physical machine is running right this moment in a virtul environment.I used disk2vhd application, created a virtual hard disk of my host machine and set up a new virtual through oracles virtualbox. The tricky part was to assign the vhd to an IDE contoller to finaly make it boot. The last two sentences are all what someone needs to use his host image in a virtual machine. Thanks for the support, thanks for...unlocking my search.Thread marked as solved.
