Hello ppl

i just had my system reinstaled with win 7 64bit professional, and can´t find a way to disable the touchpad. i prefer to use a dedicated, and very handy usb mouse. i used to have windows home edition, on this hardware, and everything worked. just pressed Fn + F9, et voila: touchpad disabled, and just use the mouse

i noticed on device manager an unknown usb device, that keeps popping up. unpluged all devices (including the mouse), rebooted, and there it is again. weird, because all usb devices (pendrives, mouse, usb harddrives, usb wi-fi modem), seem to work ok. because of that, already updated the touchpad and usb drivers, to no avail

also,

the computer is an asus n71 JQ

tahks for any help

all special keys disabled!

yes, it is Fn + F9. of that i am sure. but, now i notice that the all the other special keys (mute, volume up / down, stop / play dvd, etc) aren't functioning either. is this kind of stuff disabled in the professional edition? already tried to update all the drivers, to no avail.

thanks for the feedback

yes, instaled ATK as part of the updates previously mentioned. There are 2 of those keys working: Fn + F5 (decrease screen brightness) and Fn + F6 (increase screen brightness). Tested all the others, and they are all disabled. And can't still disable touchpad.

For now the best option seems to be, to go back to home ed. and this professional ed doesn't seem to have any added and usefull value to me, aside from remote desktop. But i refuse to be defeated by it! (for the time being, that is)

Interesting. The version difference shouldn't make a lick of difference to the hotkey functionality...

I'd like to point you in the right direction, but I have nothing else :(

I've just realised where you're going wrong.

When you had full use of your Function keys were you using the operating system and factory setup as supplied by Asus?

If so, and you then install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Professional, you need to extract the Asus software for your Function keys and install that as well.

Either that or go back to your factory settings, and then use Windows Anytime Upgrade, all you'll need to do is input your Windows Professional product key for the upgrade to take place.

Re-activate and you should then have Windows 7 Professional along with the full Asus functionality on your keyboard.

well, you got it right: was using the default os, Windows 7 home ed, and replaced with a fresh Professional ed. but i already installed what i thougt to be the right software from ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download N71Jq

they where: ATK Hotkey Utility and TOUCHPAD driver (in fact tried also Elantech Touchpad Driver). But the problem remains

As expected, putting Home back in it's place, corrected everything (although i had to update the mentioned drivers). seavixen32, thanks for the reply, but i believe that the professional version version haven't brought any meaningful added value.

many thanks to you all!!

You're very welcome.

Thanks for taking time to let us know how things turned out.

Compare Windows 7 editions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/products/compare

All that Windows 7 Professional gives you over Windows 7 Home Premium is XP Mode, the ability to join a domain on a company network, and the ability to backup to a home or business network.
