We have an ice storm headed for us later tonight, from Dallas, TX.... sure hope it misses us..
with all the trees here.. the power lines are sure to snap. I'll have no heat or power at all.

I never understood why they don't bury the power lines into the ground. In my country that was done most everywhere after WWII. And we do not have easements next to the roads. They have to bury them under the roads which make the task even more difficult.

That was a good time to do it, after WWII. A lot less area to bury as well...

Yeah, it is amazing how small Germany is. But there are 82 Million people and they had to run the lines to all their households. I think in the long run the buried lines are a good deal - rather than having to repair them twice per year on average - for over 60 years since WWII.

It's not cost effective to bury all of them, It would be after a natural disaster when everything is already wiped out but they usually just want power back up quick.

When you have a whole country in shambles after a war you might as well start from the ground up.

Yeah, after the war was the right time. But don't misunderstand me. The high voltage overland lines are also above ground. But those are so high and sturdy that I have never seen any of those come down.

Here in Florida we have all utilities under ground. But only inside our development. Looks a lot neater. But should the lines outside go down, we'd be in the dark too. Can't win.

I completely agree with you both.. we've had 3 tornadoes.. one would think they would have at least installed those downed lines underground after those.. along with widening of the streets to make 5 lane traffic,
NO they didn't place those lines underground when they moved all the other utilities to do the widening work,
in fact they dug down 10 feet to have space of all the other lines, water, sewer, natural gas, not even cable or phone lines were placed underground, when we built our home we had everything put underground , from the street to our home in those medal conduits. Seems to me with that all underground , after a few years it would have paid for itself.
I was too young to even think about making sure all the utilities would have been buried underground, now I know better.

Cold rain, but no sleet or snow... snow would be unusual for us. About 27F on Thursday morning. That is cold for here. Considered a hard freeze as many older houses are built up off the ground to o****er tidal surges fomr smaller hurricanes. But it also means the pipes are exposed and freeze easily. Newer houses, built back from the beach, don't have that problem.
