HP Bloatware And Beyond

I've had this laptop for probably over a year now and its been long overdue for a clean up (never did initially). I'll leave all the excess details out of it as much as possible (I rant about it). I have a desktop, its been in pieces since September when either the Mobo or CPU had some issues. Long story short I never figured it out and have yet to do so. I ended up using my laptop from school for just about everything. I haven't done much with it but now I'm at least trying to clean it up until (if ever) I get my desktop working again.

28. Uninstall the Bloatware Programs from Your ComputerMost computers that you buy, at a retail store (OEM), have a ton of software installed on it. Some of these can take up a lot of resources. Uninstall the programs that you do not want to use from Programs and Features.

I've been reading some threads about HP's bloatware and just wanted to verify what I should/was removing before I went through with it. I've been looking for some solid info on the bloatware on the laptop before I mess with it.

What are you trying to accomplish. Your system will not run one iota faster after you removed (even a lot) of those programs. You may save some insignificant amount of disk space though.

Just make sure those programs do not show up in the startups. Else I would leave them alone. You never know when you will need them.

Its not just HP, a bunch of computer makers are loading new systems up with trials and programs that are generally, unwanted. I get what you're saying, regardless of impacting performance or not, it just bothers you knowing they are there (like me). Most of the utility type programs that are branded with "HP" are things that are built into windows or programs that you're going to use anyway. I uninstalled about 20 programs off my new laptop when I got it.

I get what you're saying, regardless of impacting performance or not, it just bothers you knowing they are there (like me). And what was the gain?? I am a practical person. If an action does not buy me anything, I do not bother.

And unlike you I do think that a lot of those trial programs are very important. Of the 700 members of my computer club (average age 70), no 10% have a clue how a computer functions - but they are trying to learn (accent on "trying").

They buy new computers all the time - mainly laptops. If there was not a 3 month Norton or McAfee on the system, they would never know that they need an AV program - until one of us teaches them.

The same goes for e.g. Office. They would not know that such a thing existed. Also many of those "care" programs provide an important function. People are always amazed when I tell them that a PC needs maintenance like e.g. a car. They think the thing will run forever without any care.

For us Geeks it is easy to uninstall those programs, but 90% of the public that has money to buy PCs are no geeks. They think they are buying an appliance.

Like whs said it is probably best to just stop them from starting up, that is what I do, anything HP related. If you have the SWSetup folder then that could be backed up elsewhere and deleted to save a bit of space. I have tweaked my services a bit too so that I have a little over 50 processes running at startup. My boot time is between 30 - 45 secs on average and since I use CCleaner religiously I tend to maintain the same fastness of response over time. I think the only programs I have deleted were the games and the PDF reader (replaced with Foxit). The only things I have auto-checking for updates are the anti-virus and Windows.
