I am now baffled - have 2 HP printers - OfficeJet and Colour laserjet.
The office jet installed with absolutely no problems and even has full function - scan fax etc. Was picked up immediately and software/drivers installed automatically.
HOWEVER - my HP CLJ 1600 is picked up in Devices and PRinters but no drivers install. I have tried 3 times to download and install HP drivers but each time i try and extract the file it says the file is corrupt and extraction failed!
I have tried numerous things - and once it was installed, showed as device working properly but wouldnt print - no test page, no documents etc. I removed it in control panel and tried again - no it shows as an unspecifed device!

Help please......

Here are the install instructions :
Use this software for first time USB installations only. Do NOT attach USB cable until prompted by the install program
Close any software programs running on your computer.
Click the Download only button and save this file.
Double click on the downloaded file. The self-extracting process will appear.
Click to accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.
Driver installation begins. Driver files are pre-installed during this process.
A screen pops up to prompt to connect the USB cable. Insert the USB cable.
Device is connected, waiting for PnP to finish installing driver.
Click Finish to complete software installation.

I hope installing the software before connecting will resolve the issue. You might be able to restore around your first attempt if it still wont install, and try again.

You could try this cause you still have the problem - run IE8 with no add-ons, as a download manager eg adobe may be corrupting your download and redownload the file and see if it will extract :
Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)
If this works disable the add-ons by elimination if it isnt obvious - Tools - Manage add-ons.
You could also reset IE 8 in Internet Options - advanced settings. If you were using another browser it may have a similar problem.
