I have a HP Dv2700 and my webcam was working initially but randomly stopped. It now shows in device manage as an unknown device. I have tried all the fixes online but non have worked or been permanent.

I am running windows 7 64-bit

Help im so tired and getting frustrated with this problem.

Thank you in advance

Not sure which fixes you might have tried so i'm just gonna throw a few out there. My dad works for at one of the HP production plants and told me that some of the laptops have a problem with the cable connecting the cam to the motherboard becoming detached from the motherboard. This actually happened to a friend of mine's HP laptop, which is why he told me about the problem. I recommend trying to see if you can find the cable and and make sure it is connected properly. Are you sure you have the 64 bit driver installed? You say you tried a few fixes so I assume you checked this, but need to be sure. Have you tried letting Windows pick out the driver for you?

@pebbly: HP does not have any webcam drivers listed on their website for vista 64-bit and ive tried drivers for other OS dint really help and other hp models although i dint install them in compatibility mode

@petey7: i thought of that but im not exactly sure how to find the cable that would connect the webcam to the motherboards since its a laptop and yea im pretty sure in 64-bit

I have a HP USB webcam, and I just have Windows find a generic driver for me. You might want to try uninstalling the driver you installed and let Windows pick one out. You might have to go through device manager to get 7 to do this. If that does not work, then I will try to find something online explaining how to find the cable. It was pretty simple on my friends laptop, but I'm pretty sure it was a different model.

Ive tried that too...uninstalled the driver and restarted my laptop, it comes up saying installing driver and then gives me an error message that the driver was not installed and shows it in device manager as an unknown device. If you can find anything explaining how to find the cable i would try it out....hopefully i dont end up killing my laptop but at this point im willing to try almost anything

Did you right click the unknown device, hit properties, then update driver? Actually, I just remembered I need to reinstall my webcam, so I'm going to do that, then tell you all the steps I went though. I had the same problem with it initially not installing the drivers before and I'm pretty sure I just had it update drivers to get it to work.

Okay, what I did was actually download the driver for a slightly different camera, then I did what I mentioned before (the camera still had the yellow symbol next to it in DM), then windows found the right one. I'll try to think of a solution and find out how to get to the cable for you.
