This laptop suddenly just would not boot. I did find it turned off the morning that it would not boot up and I do not usually turn off the unit but just let it sleep. so it must have had something turn it off. I dont know what though. The only thing I can get it to do is to boot in safe mode and it will not restart from there though. Safe mode seems to be fine though. It would portend that things are not all that bad since it does operate . but will not boot up at all. I tried to run startup repair numerous times as well as i have rebuilt the MBR and reloaded the system from an image I had on disk as well as changed the ssd out for the old harddrive that was freshly formated and loaded with the win7 os as a backup if needed. I need it! But it will not boot either. I at a loss as to what to do next. The unit is rather old but was not giving me any problems at all. It is a sandy bridge processor which does run hot but I have often cleaned the fan out to keep good air movement over the cpu so I dont think its a thermal issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have tried to go into advanced settings and change the behavior of the machine to immediately reboot whenit flashes what appears to be a blue screen error but it will not give me a look at the error yet. it appears to me that there must be some file that is corrupted that loads when booting and hangs? i just am baffeled by this.
Any chkdsk operation that does more than scanning requires the volume to be unmounted, you need to schedule the command for the next reboot and then reboot with the Windows partition.

One of the things Safe Mode does is run your Windows session with low resolution video. Therefore, it is possible that normal resolution video is causing a problem.
Boot the computer, and hit F8 to get to the start up menu (the one which allows you to choose Safe Mode). There will be an option on that menu called "VGA Mode" or "Enable low-resolution video (640×480)" or something like that. Choose that option, and see if you can now get into Windows. If so, then the problem is either your video driver or your video hardware (your graphics "card").
There is a program called Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php) which will let you check the temperatures inside the computer. Download and run that program, to see if anything, such as your GPU, is running really hot. If the GPU is running really hot, and if enabling low-resolution video allows you to run Windows, then you have a bad graphics "card".

I use Samba to share my data drive with the other computers at my house and with my guest session in VMWare Workstation Player.
This problem is now solved in that I was able to get into diskpart and run the clean all command and also was able to format the drive and install windows 7. The thing boots now.but I am having my share of problems getting all the proper drivers to load. Namely the graphics driver. I have tried several times and always at the end of the install I get the message that this computer does not meet the minimum requirements to run this driver. It was running on this machine prior to my problems though. I am hoping that the updates from MS to Windows 7 OS will change this problem. I am really stuck if I cannot get this driver working as this is a unique situation in that this driver is two in one. There is an AMD graphics card on the MB and the intel graphics chip software on the cpu both being controled by(selectable) this driver. A single driver for each will not load. The fun here at camp runAmuck continues!
