HP laptop multiple problems

Windows 7 32bit Retail Version - Replaced OEM Windows Vista which came with the system
Computer is roughly 2.5 years old
Windows 7 was installed about 14 months ago, initially as a dual boot with Vista, in order to protect the setup as I was using it for University work. The Vista setup was eventually removed leaving Win 7 as the only OS installed on F: instead of usual C: installation.

After replacing the Vista OS the computer worked but we had dificulty replacving the . The software for the TV & blue ray player system. The webcam has also stopped working.

The computer started to BSOD regularly but I could not find the reason except that it seemed to be related to going intop sleep mode.

The screen has been replaced twice, and the motherboard has been replaced once, but these have not stopped the BSOD problem which I assume is not directly related.

Due to the importance of the PC to my Uni work I have not been able to attempt any permanent repairs. In recent months all the USB ports have stopped recognising external disks/thumbdrives etc although it does connect the speakers to my lapdesk.

The latest problem is that the WI-Fi has stopped working for no apparent reason, itis disabled but I do not know why.

As you can see from the above this computer is something of a mess!!!

I am reluctant to take it back to HP again as they initially recommended against installing Win7, despite the fact that Vista was becoming virtually unusable.

The Win 7 forum was a great help to my Dad when the new OS was installed and I hope that you can assist again with the multitude of problems I have now.Primarily I would like to solve the BSOD problem and get the USB, Wi-fi and webcam functioning again. If you can also solve the TV/Blue ray issues that would be a plus but is not essential.

Lot's of outdated drivers or pre-windows 7 drivers that could cause conflicts.

AVG is known to be a cause of BSOD's on some Win 7 systems so you need to uninstall it. Download the correct AVG Remover for your system. AVG Remover(64bit) or AVG Remover(32bit). If you have AVG ID protection installed, download the AVGID Protection Remover as well (it won't hurt to d'load and run it anyway). Download Microsoft Security Essentials as its replacement. Re-boot to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode run the AVG Removal tools. Re-boot to normal mode and install MSE. Make sure your Windows firewall is enabled!

Hello Suyin, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The following is my personal opinion, based on my long experience with HP computers both desktop and laptop, and especially with Pavilion series laptops. Other geeks might recommend you another approach, this is how I would do it:

• Backup all your personal files and folders to an external drive. You mentioned that you have had problems connecting external drives; if so and if you are a risk taker you can leave them for now in your current Windows disk / partition F: and continue reading
• Boot from your Windows 7 installation DVD, select Install now, select Custom installation (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20146-custom-install-windows-7-a.html)
• Use Windows 7 installation tools to format partition C: (If you could not backup your files to external drive, be sure not to format F: where your old Windows 7 is located with all your personal stuff)
• When Seven is installed to C: and booted to desktop, the LAN drivers should work and you can use Internet. Go to this page: Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv5-1063tx Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
• Download all items visible on the web page screenshot below. I have blurred those you really do not need (right click image and open it in a new tab or window, then click once to enlarge it to readable size):

• HP drivers are self-extracting packages with name spXXXXX.exe, where XXXXX is a five digit number. The packages are by default extracted to C:\SWSETUP\SPXXXXX, each package to its own subfolder. When downloading, please rename each folder where the packet is extracted or write down which spXXXXX subfolder contains what driver
• When downloaded all, you can begin installing drivers. Go through each subfolder in the SWSETUP folder and run setup.exe (or install.exe). Items on the list above marked with red numbers 1. and 2. are the most important; install first the chipset driver (1.) and reboot, then graphics driver (2.) and again reboot before installing any other drivers
• The rest you can install in any order you want to. Exception: Please install Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver before Digital Persona software
• Restore your personal files from backup

Your laptop should now be ready to go.

Hi Kari,
Thanks for your advice, I think you may well be right I was hoping that I could avoid all the software loading that goes with re-installing the OS but I suspect that this may well be the answer in the end. Had it not been for the university work, not too mention the time it took to get Win7 loaded with all the essential driver updates etc etc, it probably would have been better, once we knew that Win7 worked Ok, to start all over again and do the install properly to the C drive in the first place, it was definitely an improvement over Vista and it did get me through my university courses successfully which was the object of the exercise. I guess I should point out that I live in Kuala Lumpur (and studied in UK) so the upgrade had to be done during a holiday break at home in KL which meant that time was limited.

One question, given that I live in KL and the computer was purchased in KL will there be any issues with obtaining the drivers from the HP site in USA due to local differences in specs? Our local HP office is not far from my house and they are usually quite helpful but when asked to assist with upgrading to Win7 they were not very helpful even though at the time the computer was only just a year old.

Anyway thanks for your help, I will see how I get on over the weekend (although if we have to do the re-install it will probably take days to get all the software up and running again!

You can use the site I told you to download all drivers. On top of the page is a link where you can choose language, if your Windows is not in English. Most drivers are the same for every language but if another language is chosen and a certain driver has a language specific version, then the correct language version is downloaded.
