HP Laserjet 1012 (x64) Drivers

Hey,

I have a HP Laserjet 1012 printer, and I cant get drivers to load, I tried the Vista x64 drivers from HP, they arent seen by the wizard, and if I try to force it to use them (manually pick driver, then "have disk") it reports that there are no drivers for 64 bit in the folder with the drivers in it.. Anyone managed to get this printer working?

I have a Laserjet 1010, and I'm using the x64 drivers from HP without any trouble. Just that I cannor get the pronter preferences page to load.

Try installing the drivers this way:

You probably got your drivers as a self-extracting archive. Extract this archive to a folder.

In the Devices and Printers window in the Control Panel, right click your printer and then select Properties. Change to the Hardware tab.

Here, double click the IEEE 1284.4 Printing Support line to open up its properties. Notice that all the buttons on the Driver tab except Driver Details are greyed out.

Click the Change Settings button on the General tab. Now this dialog will close and reopen.

Change to the Driver tab again, and click Update Driver.

Click Browse my Computer for Driver Software.

On the page that opens, select Let me pick from a list...

Then click the Browse button and navigate to the folder containing the drivers you extracted earlier and select the file hpc1015w.inf. If you have hidden file extensions it should be the only file visible.

It should work fine.

I followed the procedure outlined by Pillainp to the letter and still get the message that hpc1015w.inf doesn't contain any 64 bit drivers. It was looking good right up to the final pop-up dialog box. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 bit on a Dell XPS420. Any suggestions?

Worked for me for HP 1012 on Windows 7 x64.. I d/l and extracted Vista 64-bit Vista drivers from HP.

The file should be named "lj1010serieshb-vista64.zip".

How about on a network

I've got the Vista drivers now on my win7 PC, but printer is over a home network, connected to an XP based machine. I cannot get it to work with either XP or vista drivers.

Laserjet 1012 on remote XP based system
Can't configure as network printer on local Win 7 based system
do have another remote printer working, so I know I have access over the network, and my win7 system does "see" the shared remote 1012 printer, just cant talk to it

I think you are updating the wrong printing support device. There were 3 in my case.

Double click the IEEE 1284.4 Printing Support line to open up its properties

I had the same problem at first and then realized I am updating the driver for the DOT printing support and not the IEEE 1284.4 Printing Support. I am glad to report that despite what Microsoft and HP tell you that the LaserJet 1012 is not compatible with Windows 7, it runs just fine with Vista Drivers and I can get full functionality including printing preferences etc.

I ended up getting mixed results with the method described here (Windows 7 would pause for many seconds between printing pages). So based on the advice in this forum thread at HP, I removed the HP 1012 printer and set the HP Laserjet 3055 as my default printer. Then Windows 7 noted the HP 1012 as new hardware, and I let it load the drivers it wanted to automatically. It's kind of weird in that HP 1012 does not show in the printer devices page, but it does show as an option to print with. It so far seems to work well.

Make sure you do NOT connect the printer
Then...
1. Control Panel -> Device & Printers -> Add a Printer
2. Find HP Laserjet 1015 (if it's not there, click Windows Update) and install it
3. Install HP Laserjet 1012 with original installer, it will bomb out with errors
4. Delete HP Laserjet 1015
5. Plug in the printer
6. It should say "driver successfully installed" - you are done
7. If errors show up, unplug and plug the printer again, you may need to restart computer as well

While all of these ideas for getting the HP 1012 to work with Windows 7 seemed great, none worked for me...
I guess I 'll just have to chuck it all and go get the flawless, error-proof, virus-proof, and ideal new Mac...

Whoa...wait a minute...

By the time I was done burning incense and praying to 14 or so different computer 'gawdz', I had an epiphany of sorts and went and checked the USB cable. I snatched it out and FIRMLY reseated it...it needed that last little 'nudge'..

Whoa! The screen responded as it was supposed to and said it had completed installing the driver. Everything is working as indicated above. Thanks guys!

I've printed stuff from all sorts of software and it all was done correctly...

Thanks for the straighforward procedure. Ran the setup for the LaserJet 1010/1012/1015 Printing System for Windows XP that I downloaded from the HP web site:

As predicted, that installer bombed out. Deleted the 1015, plugged in my 1012, but needed the Windows 7 printer troubleshooter to locate the driver. After that process completed, a test page came out fine. Note that the port used was DOT4_001, not LPT1. Printer was identified as Laserjet 1012 HB.

HP 1012 printer problems using Windows 7

On another forum I read about installing the 1012 as a 3055. Sorry to say, but the solution of using the HP 1012 as a HP 3055 lasted less than a day. It worked fine for awhile, but when it quit I could not get it working again. After another day of trying this and that, I got the HP 1012 to print once more. It has been working for two days and I am crossing my fingers. My solution was to install it as a HP Laserjet 1015 (Zenegraphics, Inc.), using the existing printer port labled DOT4_001 (Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing port). Please note that the standard HP Laserjet 1015 setting did not work. It had to be the one labled HP Laserjet 1015 (Zenegraphics, Inc.). I am not a computer genus, but when you stumble around long enough, sometimes you get lucky. I hope that this solution lasts and helps someone. I also bought a new HP Laserjet P1006 and had the same problem, but now that I got the 1012 working I am going to return it.

I read your post about the Zenegraphics drivers for the HP 1015. Can you please tell me where you found those drivers? I cannot locate them at all.

Almost perfect solution

I managed to install the Vista 32bit drivers, but the printer preferences couldn't be accessed. They killed any program I tried to access them from. This was a problem to me, because sometimes I need to print 2 or 4 pages on one. Also it's nice if the print quality can be adjusted.

The solution was based on many of your comments. Here are the steps:

1. Install printer with Vista drivers (preferences still don't work)
2. In "Devices and Printers" click "Add a Printer"
3. Choose "Add a local printer"
4. Select existing "DOT4_001" port
5. Manufacturer=HP Printer="HP Laserjet 1015"
6. Make it default, share it if you want to

Here comes the triky part: no new printer appears under "Printers and faxes" instead: right clicking on the 1010 (or 1012) you can choose which printer you want to adjust. You can access the 1015 preferences (1010 preferences still generates an error). The However the 1015 preferences do have effect.

HP 1012 printer problems using Windows 7

I have had several emails on installing the HP Laserjet 1012 as a HP Laserjet 1015 with the Zenographics, Inc. driver using Windows 7.

Here are the detailed instructions: go to Devices & Printers>Add a Printer>Add Local Printer>Use existing Port>Dot4_001 (Generic)>Install Printer>Manufacturer HP>Scroll down to HP Laserjet 1015>You will find two 1015's, (Microsoft) and (Zenographics, Inc)>Use HP 1015 (Zenographics, Inc.)>Next>Check on replace current driver>Printer Name (Whatever you want to call it)>Next>Install Printer. Before I started, I removed the HP 1012 installation to clear the slate. Note: Every once in a while the printer will give you an error message saying that this is an unsupported personality, or words to that effect. Just turn off the printer and when you turn it back on again, it will work once more.

I understand that it is caused by the printer going into a graphics mode if you are printing certain things that it considers graphics and then will not print normal text. Again, I am not a computer genus and I am sure that a lot of guys out there could explain the why's a lot better that I can. With that being said, my printer works just fine about 95% of the time. Contact HP and let them know how you feel about your printer NOT being supported using Windows 7. HP 1015 Zenegraphics

Thank you Ollie Octopus, for your informative post re: installing the HP 1015 Zenegraphics drivers in windows 7. I was pleased to read that they worked for you a majority of the time.

However, when I look for that driver file in Windows 7 (even after I have pressed the 'Windows Update' button several times), I still only have 1 driver file listed - and that is not the Microsoft labelled one either.

It seems that you are blessed with a different version of Windows 7 than I am that it includes this driver in your list. I wonder how I can avail myself of this driver file.
