I had trouble finding how to get my HP Laserjet 4 printer to work in Windows 7.

My research indicates it would run in Vista using built in drivers, but I didn't have or use Vista. I also tried driversguide, and HP site just says "supported"

When I used one of the available earleir drivers I always get the error message:
"W2 INVALID PERS"

OK Solved it now. Lots of drivers in a package for HP laserjets. Go to the Windows Update page and download the package; here:
Microsoft Update Catalog

Any chance you still have those files? I have been trying to get the driver off the site all morning and it keeps failing.

HP Laserjet 4 Drivers

HI,

2 ways to add the printer.

First, you can go to Microsoft Update Catalog and then search for the drivers and download them.

Second, when you go to add your printer, select "not in list" and then when the list of printers comes up, click on "Windows Update".

It will likely take a few minutes before the printer list reappears. Once it does, go down, click on HP and the Laserjet 4 will now appear.

Go ahead and install.

Now... if anyone knows how to get the laserjet 4 driver for Windows 7 added to my Server 2003 share... so that i can install the printer over my home network without individually manually adding it on each of my 3 machines, that would be cool.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

I was able to use my Laserjet 4 with no problem. Just go to "add a printer" and select "windows update." There will be a selection for the Laserjet 4.

I found the drivers but couldn't find a cable.
I purchased a IOGear GUC1284B USB to Centronix cable which installed just fine, but the system (Win 7 Pro 64 bit) doesn't see the printer hanging on the end of the cable.

Any suggestions, please?

Bought it in 1993, keep it well maintained, and it prints beautifully and unbelievably inexpensivly! And I don't want to give any of that up!

Now - any ideas on a cable that will work - drivers don't seem to be the issue - I found and installed drivers for Windows 7 64bit for HP LaserJet 4

Thanks,

I completed the driver update via the menu option add a printer. Updated the printer list and selected HP Laser Jet 4 Plus. It downloaded and my computer "sees" the printer, but nothing is printing. Anyone have any ideas?

How did you connect it to the computer - that is my problem.

I have a real kludge solution - I have it connected to a Win 2000 computer on the network and print to it that way - until the network connection drops which it does after avery print job or so it seems.

I need a reliable way to connect this reliable old workhorse to a Win 7 64 bit system!

Thanks,

John

Help on HP Laserjet 4

I also found the driver and installed it. It prints, but the only problem is I use it to print checks and it is saying a certain font isn't installed. I looked on my old computer and there are tons more options under printer features that refers to bitmap and none under the windows 7. Please help I need to print vendor checks. I want to say it has to do with the driver for windows 7 but hp is not help! Thanks!

Wondering if you're running the 32 or 64 bit version. I've DL'd the MD driver update for an HP LJ 4M+ and having problem using that update to load in a 64 bit version, across a network where the printer is hanging off a W2k machine... Any thoughts?

also replying to I can see any more replies to this thread...

Works sporadically (64 bit)

I did d/l the 64 bit drivers from HP for the printer onto the WIN 7 Pro 64bit machine originally.

The printer on the W2k computer works fine ON THAT COMPUTER - always did.

The problem, as you are finding, too, apparently, is keeping the added network printer working, i.e. I "add" it and it works, but a few hours later, come back and it doesn't.
I've ended up using it, removing it (when it lets me), and adding it back when I need it for large print jobs. A real PIA, I know, but the only work around I've found.

My update... on the network my printer machine (Dell Latitude laptop PIII-500 w/512M,20G) & HPLJ4M+ is very stable and I never have any issues printing to it from any of my W2k/XP machines. It's up 24/7 and get a regular reboot on the first day of the month.

I did have to enable checking the MS site for updates on the W7 box, but was able to find and install the MS HP4 driver and am now printing with W7/64 to a 12+y/o printer. Only been up for <24hrs, so only time will tell if there are any other issues with it... But so far it looks quite stable. (happy dance!)

To date I've found the best method to interface an old HP Laserjet 4 series is using the add-on network card. I keep the printer on its own connected to my network with a static IP address and every machine, including the Windows 7 box, can access it quite seamlessly.

Lazerjet 4 help needed

I also found and installed the driver. I still cannot print. Someone suggested that the Lazerjet 4 was not compatible with Windows 7 but I see some people have been successful. I need very specific instructions/help, I am not great with a computer. I work for 2 non-profit organizations and we really need to be able to use this printer.

You can use any of the following drivers built into Windows 7. HP LaserJet 4, HP LaserJet 4 Plus, HP LaserJet 4000 PCL5, HP LaserJet 4L, and HP LaserJet 5 one of them will work for your older HP printer.

I also have a LaserJet 4L (circa 1994) and it's still going strong. It has a perfect small footprint and is not very high when compared to some of the modern laser printers.

I got a Belkin USB to Parallel lead and when installing I used the Windows 7 additional download to add to the printer list.

Worked perfectly :D

Installing a HP Laserjet 4 plus on W& 64 bit

Some people have made it seem simple, particularly terster. Following the link to the Microsoft Update Catalog gives a lot of options that look very similar. They are all zipped files. When they are upzipped there are scores of files to select from, but which one?

I have purchased a USB to parallel converter cable, which Windows 7 seems to recognise as Unspecified USB2.0-Print icon which suggests to me that my PC can see the converter cable, but nothing beyond it.

Meanwhile on Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a printer > Add a local printer: I have tried both LPT1 and USB001 (Virtual printer port); either option leads to a request to specify a Printer. Clicking on “Have Disk” enables a browse for the file, but Windows 7 is looking for a *.inf file, The zipped file does not have a *.inf file in it.
.
There is no “not in list” option or “Windows update”. What software is being used here: I have W7 (64 bit) professional.

Can someone who has done it provide a step-by-step guide before I shoot myself. I have done nothing else for 2 days.

I was having no problems printing to my good old LaserJet 4P and my Dell AIO962-until today!

Now it recognizes no printers and the print spooler keeps turning itself off-all this out of the blue!

Any ideas?
