runs a minute or two then shuts off. I do hear a noise... cant tell if its the hard drive or something else making the noise?
Im finding stuff online saying this model is known for issues of overheating or bad motherboard issues...
can anyone shed some light on this mystery? is the motherboard fried or is it something else? how do I troubleshoot this to find out why it's shutting down?

I would check your cpu fan to make sure its operating properly. Also, one thing i might also do is to unscrew the cpu fan and make sure the thermal paste has not worn off completely; as if that happens; the fan and the heatsink wont be able to dissipate heat proerly; which in turn can cause a thermal shutdown due to too high of a temperature.
Also have a pretty bad speaker setup which is a klipsch promedia 5.1 surround speaker setup with huge subwoofer and lg blu ray player/writer. Also a hp officejet pro 8600 plus wireless all in one and a logitech s7500 webcam.
is it difficult to get to the fan? I've never worked inside a laptop before other than upgrading RAM.

seems fine with chord plugged in. so perhaps it was just a bad battery causing this? seems ok now with AC plugged in.
