back up win7 with ext. hard disk drive?

can i store informations in ext. hard disk drive after backing up win7 starter on ext. hard disk drive?

how do you back up your OS; HP recovery manager or cloning software?

you use Win 7 Backup and Restore.

The only system image backup software I've ever used on Win 7 systems.

If you have further questions, feel free to ask.

Multiple partitions are not needed. Certainly you can have a WindowsImageBackup folder in each partition and each will be recognized by the boot reimage media.
Read the (two) Windows imaging and Restore tutorials. You can rename the Images and/or move them into folders. I know it works fine - I've done it many times.
At reimage time, from the boot media, rename and/or move an image back to the name WindowsImageBackup located in the root of a partition "Refresh" and it's recognized. You can give your images names and folder storage that mean something.

I primarily use Windows imaging but others as well. Windows imaging is not the "be all and end all". Others will give extra security if Windows imaging fouls up and extra capabilities.
eg. Macrium Reflect (free), Easeus V3 (free).

First post a snip of your current dsik management display with the external drive connected.

HOW TO POST A SNAPSHOT OF DISK MANAGEMENT DISPLAY

Run disk management:
WIN | type DISKMGMT.MSC | ENTER
WIN is the key with the wavy flag.

Maximize the output of Disk Management:
ALT-Spacebar key combo (this pops up a menu) followed by X key (selects Maximize) |
Drag the field separators (such as between Status and Capacity) to show entire field. This is very important, otherwise, needed info is not visible.

Make a snapshot:
WIN | type SNIPPING | ENTER | New
Drag the cursor around the area you want to snip.
File | Save as | select save location and name | Save

Post the snapshot:
· Click on the paperclip icon in that row of icons at the top of the message box.
· BROWSE button. There are 5 choices.
· Navigate to the folder containing the snapshot.
· Click on the snapshot.
· OPEN
· UPLOAD button which is adjacent to the 5th BROWSE button.
· Close the MANAGE ATTACHMENTS window.
· Position the cursor at the spot in the message where you want the
snapshot to appear.
· Click on the PaperClip again.
· Click on the file which you want to insert
· Attach code will be inserted into your message.
