Hi,

It's my first post on this forum , so ... my name is Karol , and I'm from Poland.

Unfortunately I've got a big problem with my huawei e156g usb modem. I'm plugging it into usb port , and windows recognise it as a usb drive ( which is true , because it's got a microSD slot ). But nothing more is happening :/ I can't see any additional ( even "unrecognised device" ) info in the device manager. I know there should be at least new device in the "Ports (COM & LPT )" section.

My windows is 32-bit RC1.

I downloaded drivers from the manufacturer site , but i can't install them.

Long story short - that sux :/

From what i've been reading in the interenet generally , and on this forum , there is problem with 3g usb modems on windows 7.

I found thread on this forum with similar problem ( but different modem ) and the problem fixed itself after installing newer build of windows.

Is there any "tutorial" , or "tips&tricks" how to install such things ?

I'd be very grateful for any help.

Bes regards
Karol

Hi there
Welcome from "The frozen North"

I assume that your USB modem is one of those 3G-Mobile broadband one's for example like one of these - not suggesting you Buy but look at the pictures to see if your device looks like one of these.

Data Devices - Mobile Broadband - Vodafone

Now I'm not sure how the 3G system works in Poland but I'm sure it's much the same Europe wide so what usually happens is that there is actually SOFTWARE on the device itself so your computer should just see the device as an "external hard drive" or "removable drive".

Use Windows explorer to run the setup of the software - there will be some setup.exe or install file on the DEVICE itself.

This should then show up some "Dashboard" where you will get a prompt to connect to your Mobile service.

The reason the software is installed from the device itself is that the whole point of this is to be used on Laptops where - especially if they are company or work one's - you won't necessarily have admin rights but you still want to connect to the Internet / email / VPN's etc.

Added if it gives you an error like "Unsupported OS" run the software in VISTA SP2 COMPATABILITY MODE. This fixes a lot of install problems -- the option works on W7 RC build 7100.

Cheers
jimbo

Hey,

Hmm ... it's working :] Actually , I'm not really sure what helped , was that the fact , that i left the modem for severals minutes plugged into the laptop and finally he was detected by the system ( :P ) , or the fact that i used "vista legacy" mode like you proposed.

Eather way - it's working :] Thank you very much.

You must have autoplay enabled for the 3g modem to work, it took a while before I figured it out...

my modem worked perfectly and just stopped... windows states "it can't load the driver", buit refuses to let me reinstall it manually (it says it has determined I use the best driver nowx, so, it won't do what I tell it to do.. on a sidenote, I'd have a suggestion: when a user says he/she wants to install something manually, windows should either refuse because it's absolutely not compatible (like unix drivers on windows, for example), or do what it's told to do... instead of deciding that the user is an absolute idiot unable to know what he's doing or why... if it's manual, it means manual... windows does and shuts up...

sorry, it really got on my nerves this time...

anyway, I cleaned all trace of the software, and tried to reinstall the modem... it goes nice until initialising, when it can't load the driver. I checked in events journal, and there seem to be a signature problem with the modem.sys file... what is strange is that there was no problem before and my both modems worked perfectly (huawei E160 and E172, one for france and the other for UK). now, none could load.

it seems that the problem arrived after the "test update" for windows 7 for x64 PC... 970419 and 970420

guess something went wrong with the files included... I'm trying to put my hands on a modem.sys file to see if I can manage to repair it, but if it won't do, I'll have to reinstall seven... (unless I find a way to remove all the files installed in that "update" )

Hi I know the feeling. are you getting the unsigned driver issue or incompat message?
You can un-install the update that is giving you grief.
you can also roll back or uninstall the driver. did the modem work before the driver?

Sorry to be throwing all these questions at ya but im just trying to visualize where you are at right now

Ken

I'm back on Vista for the moment (and it feels horribly slow in comparison  )

In fact, I couldn't figure out what update did that (I do windows updates on weekends by my dsl line at home, and I had the problem with the modem once I was gone, so, not easy to see what thing did what). What's more, Windows would simply tell me that it couldn't load the driver when I clicked on the modem line (with error) in hardware manager. The modem worked just fine before that.

When I tried to uninstall the driver, it goes ok, but reinstall ends up the same way every time.. there's an error when initialising the modem. If I try to update the modem driver, windows tells me that the driverr à use is the best already and it wouldn't change it
