Huge access delay for majority of files

I started with a fresh install of Win7 Ultimate on the laptop I am using, and quickly noticed that there is a delay of ~5-10 seconds any time I try to do any action which reads from the hard drive. Starting new programs is the most affected. I've also noticed that programs I have open already, such as my instant messenger, will play sounds in a very delayed fashion as well. I will send a message and the "message sent" sound will play much later, after I'm already doing something else. If I leave my music player for a bit and then try to play a song, I have the same issue.

It seems like any I/O to the hard disk is being delayed by some arbitrary amount of time. This is very noticeable and I'm wondering what I can do to work this out. I've disabled a few services and made sure my background processes weren't using up too much memory/cpu.

Try this first. Open an elevated command prompt (start-type cmd in the search box-right click-select run as administrator) When the command prompt opens copy and paste this into the window sfc /scannow that is a system file checker. It will test the integrity of system files and repair them if it can. If it comes back and says it found no integrity issues you will be reasonably assured that the OS is OK. Next download the diagnostic program from the manufacturers website for whatever brand of hard drive you have. It is also possible you have a virus. Download Malwarebytes - free and install it and run a complete scan of your computer. Let us know the results of those tests.
Also, it is helpful to us if you fill out your system specs. It helps us know what hardware we are dealing with so we can help you better.

Hi Jcuffe and welcome to sevenfoums, It might also be the driver for the device, did you try and get one off of the makers website?

I ran the command that was suggested, here was the result:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

I've attached the log which was generated.

Also, I'm using an HP Pavilion dv8000. I have updated drivers from the manufacturer website - unfortunately there is no listed driver for the chipset or hard disk.
