HUGE problem with Memory Detection

xxking and Layback Bear, you have different make motherboards, but who makes your BIOS?
I have AMI Bios 502 which make me think it's probably not bios causing the problem, it's the motherboard it's self.

Alright, thank you for your help. it may indeed be the memory controller .. and it may indeed be a wide problem thats been caused by intel because of how they built their CPUs etc. Anyway - this build wont see anymore upgrades, most likely that during summer of 2013 is when i will build a new pc
for now what awaits this computer is batman arkham city and later mass effect 3 :P

What bothers me about your case though is you've said that it showed 12GB when you installed the second set, then later lost memory down to 10GB, then 8GB. This could mean the controller is failing and whether it will completely fail or continue to recognize the remaining channels only time will tell.

If it is the IMC then changing the motherboard won't do anything as it is integrated into the CPU.
That is correct and what I was speaking to in the first paragraph where I said, "Looking through Newegg reviews I don't see mention of this problem, even though both the X58 and the P67 have integrated memory controllers."

If I was not clear xxking, I did mean that both these platforms have the memory controller integrated on the CPU itself.

I hope i am not starting to get annoying with all my questions lol.

I wanted to ask - when you click on computer - the window with all your hard drive partitions etc. on the bottom it shows the processor I am using and Memory and the memory shows me 12.0GB but when I click right click on computer it shows me that 12 are installed and 8 are usable.. what I wanted to ask is - is it supposed to be like that? or is windows having detection problems by itself? its just very confusing that here it shows me 12 gigs and there it shows me 12 installed 8 usable

The memory shown in Computer is basic and just shows 12GB installed. The best places to look in Windows for memory breakdown are Resource Manager and Task Manager. That is where you will see that only 8GB are usable and other info. The conflict you have going is what is then indicating to Windows to reserve memory for hardware resulting in the approximate 4GB loss you see.

If your BIOS is showing just over 8GB as you've said, it's odd that Windows and I think you said CPU-Z are seeing 12GB installed; but then that's why I still suspect the BIOS may be skewed. If so, then there's still hope that the motherboard itself is fine. Again, stay tuned to EVGA for any BIOS updates as one may, for reasons known only to the little gremlins that live inside these things, solve your problem.

X58 chipsets have the common problem of RAM not picking up on the mobo. I installed my Asus P658D x58 board, and fitted my i7 and my ram, and only 4gb of 6gb of my triple channel ram picked up. I just switched slots. Try reseating your CPU as I've been told it's something to do with pressure distributed amongst the board. Reseat the CPU cooler and the RAM sticks and see how that goes.

(Switched my slots for my RAM and they all worked, but it seems you're using all slots.)

After going through many many things I sent the mothr board back again. Still waiting for it's return. I went back to using my other computer using Windows 7. Today when I turned on the surge protector the damn power supply blew up (big bang) and lots of smoke. I'm back to using my grandpa compute with XP-PRO, EVO W6000 with duel xeon 2.4. I have not had a lot of computer luck in the last couple of months. If I get in the mood today I will install another power supply and give every thing a clean up and find out if the power supply took anything with it. I will also have to pick up a bottle of old #7 I'm out. Not for the clean up but for me.

That really stinks Layback, no pun intended. I hope the PS didn't take anything else with it. I had a PS go years ago and was fortunate that was all that needed replacing. Hope yours works out that way as well.
