I started my computer today and nothing works. Keyboard, mouse, usb ports, pci port that has the network card, nothing. The mouse is wireless the keyboard is usb. If I boot in to bios the keyboard works. I loaded an Ubuntu live cd and everything works just fine. But nothing in windows regular or safe mode.

I can't do anything in windows to try and fix the problem because I have no keyboard or mouse to do anything. It's like all of my ports have shut off for some reason.

What do I do to fix this? Please help.

EDIT - Windows Ultimate 64

If you got into BIOS and keyboard works, and you got into Ubuntu and both work, then the culprit is probably the drivers for the USB. Is the wireless mouse to a usb or is it bluetooth?

Do you have a Installation Disc or Recovery Disc for win7?

More info and interesting speculation: We had severe thunderstorms in Indiana last night. Your computer if plugged in could have suffered a surge. I can't explain why Ubuntu would work perfectly still though. I dont think your USB's are fried, but it might have overloaded you mobo and shutdown windows improperly.

the wireless mouse is to a usb. I didn't try the last known good config. I started in to safe mode and still nothing worked.

I'm running off the live cd right now, so I'll shut down and try the last known good config and see if that works. God I hope so. I'll post back in a few to let you know.

The last known good config did not work. My Windows is an ISO on the HD of the computer that is not working. I am going to try and network to my laptop with this live cd and get the iso to it so that I can burn it. How do i run the repair or recovery from that disk?

Thanks Bare Foot Kid, but my computer will start just fine. It boots to desktop with the only problem being what I said above. Will the startup repair fix what is wrong? It seems like a driver issue to me.

Sorry mate, I thought that's what you were asking for.

Can you get to safe mode in Windows, F8 at boot?

Have alook at Method Two in the tutorial at the link below, see if you can do a system restore to a point before the issue started; I dom't know if it'll work or not but it can't hurt.

Thanks. I'll give that a shot and see if it works. This is the first time I have had problems with Seven and I am still at a loss as to why it happened. Hopefully this will take care of it.

Could Windows Update have added a driver to your system that is causing problems?

Thanks, I will try this and see if it works. This sis the first time I have had a problem with Seven and I am at a loss as to why it happened. I did leave my computer on and left the house to go watch a baseball game that my nephew was playing in last night. The wife was here, alone, with my computer. I never thought until now that it was off when I got back home........

I have auto-update turned off. I do all that manually.

HOLY CRAP!!! It worked. I had it scan for affected changes and it only showed one thing that would be changed, something called "libusb" something or another. I never installed it, and My wife said she never touched it...

Well, I'm just glad it is back up and working again. I am going to run my acronis program and back up the HD so it doesn't happen again. Thanks for the help!!!!!
