Hurricane Tracking 2012

Yeah, they used those clips on my house. I guess they hold a little better. But when a tree falls on the house, they are no help. And my house is not wood, but built in stone. So I still don't understand why they could not put a concrete ceiling on the top of it.

One of the excuses was that they would not know how to run all the AC vents, power lines, etc. But that is easy. You just make the walls a foot higher and run those lines under the concrete ceiling. Then camouflage that with a false hanging ceiling. I was willing to pay the extra, but they just would not do it.

People just don't want to change. It is the same with the power lines below ground. In the long run that is cheaper and does not expose millions of people to power cuts. And in the US it is easy because there are normally easements on the sides of the road. In Germany they have to bury them under the street (no easements) which is a lot more expensive. But here it was done everywhere after WWII.

It depends on location in the US I would say. Maybe they didn't know how to make such a roof, and claimed they couldn't then run cables and pipes.

Channel on satellite here called Home and Gardentv that has construction shows on it. They have some concrete houses, and very sturdy roofs that a tree won't puncture. But fomr watching the Holmes on Homes shows, many companies short cut and don't do things up to building codes.

Wolfgang, I would have told that bunch to take a hike. While I've not seen a house with a concrete roof it sure makes sense especially in FL. They used to have to run steel rods attached to the roof to 4 feet underground.

Just today on the radio I was listing to a power company explain that underground wiring would cost to much and later on maintenance would be too difficult. How true this is, I don't know. Some newer subdivisions have all utilities underground but this is in the high end subdivisions. Concrete house and or roof sounds like a great idea.
Two problems arise. Finding a company that knows how to do it. Also getting a code variation to allow it to be done in a legal fashion. It took years to get metal studs allowed to build walls with. They are stronger and don't burn and yet it took years for code in many places to be changed allowing it. Stones, concrete, steel and earth would be my choice when I get fat with cash.
This would work for me.

Isaac, just a few months ago, dumped much more rain in this area.

A few years after Katrina hit, I saw a documentary on a scientist doing core samples in Louisiana swamps. His preliminary findings are that hurricanes have been hitting North America for twenty thousand years. Six thousand years of that would be during the last ice age.

I think Katrina had a much lower eye pressure.

I found this:
The central pressure in Katrina fell to 902 mb near 1800 UTC 28 August

That is nothing but poor excuses. It's being done in many European countries since nearly a century and I doubt that the European power companies are richer than the US companies.

I aggree with that Wolfgang, they just want to keep their money and not improve the infrastructure. We already have much of our phone lines buried. I think there would be much less maintenance after power lines are buried.

Folks I didn't say I agreed with the power company just that they stated that for a reason. I had a idea many years ago if they put everything under ground it would be a great time to start a new company just to recycle old utility polls. Got to do something with millions and millions of those polls.

Jack, I agree with Gary. Our comments were not at all directed at you.

Regarding the poles. They make good fences, enclusures for large outside planters. Hillholders for gardens on a slope, etc. That was the usage for the old railroad ties in the Germany in the 70's when those were replaced with concrete ties.

That would be another area of improvement the American railroad system would need. Modern trains like the TGV that go at 570Km/h cannot run on tracks from the civil war. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Layg7NpyTes&feature=related

Some regulations, like electrical, get feedback form the power companies.

Also, it will take years to recover from Sandy. I've seen reports of complaints about no electricity. Some buildings, including power sub-stations no longer exist.

Here it is 7 years later and I can find building lots with nothing but a concrete slab on them due to Katrina.
