Hey guys

I used hyperteminal in windows xp to dial in to BBS boards, (Yes they are still around!!)
but I have noticed windows 7 no longer has that and What I have done for the past while was use the xp verson, by comming the porgram folder over,

I later found there is a verson for 7 you can pay for, but I have no money

Is there a free alternative to hyperteminal that does dialing in?

Not even using the original XP HyperTerminal copied into Windows 7 from the last section at the link above?

Original XP HyperTerminal

If you just can’t live without the original HyperTerminal in Windows XP, you can actually extract two files from your XP installation and copy them over to Windows 7 or Vista.

The two files you will need are hypertrm.dll and hypertrm.exe. Simply copy those files into any directory on your machine and it will work. You should be able to find hypertrm.exe in C:\Program Files\Windows NT and hypertrm.dll in C:\Windows\System32.

If you have the Windows XP CD, you should be able to find both of these files in the i386 directory on the CD.

Argh, I missed that 30 day trial part. :(

I'm not sure of what else to suggest. Hopefully someone may know of a free program that will support using the modeom to dial in.

Hi there

I'd tend to use an XP virtual machine for this -- In any case I don't think it's a good idea to try and work these older programs for W7 as you might find they suddenly stop working any time you do an update.

Maybe even XP mode would be fine for this.

I assume that W7 supports your modem -- you can always use the command box to type a couple of the old AT type commands to see if you get a response from the modem.

If the Modem works ok you won't have any probs with a Windows XP Virtual machine.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there
Logon to your Virtual Machine and then go to ADD new Hardware -- then install the modem driver software.

Should work fine. Works fine on a Windows 2000 Virtual machine -- haven't tried further back than that.

I'm using Vmware workstation BTW (Version 7.1)

Cheers

Hi there
The VM will see it as a Network adapter

I've used USB data modules in a VM too -- these also do a dial up.

Attach this adapter as your network adapter -- in the VM go to ADD NEW CONNECTION in the networking section in the control panel.

Cheers
