I am going to pull my hair out!Wireless Networking Win7

Folks, thanks in advance for reading.

I would first like to say this is not my first network to setup, however I am new with the Windows 7. I am currently using a WRT160N router v24-sp2 (09-08-09)BS's build 12874, who is repeating a wireless signal of another router. I have in the past with Windows XP, was able to successfully transfer data between the computers on the network, send print docs to the shared printer on a computer in the network.

I cannot however not do this with two fresh installs of Windows 7. I can however connect both the PC's to a hardwired connection to the router and share just fine between the two machines. I know they have the same subnet, and they are on the same IP range. I have tried to ping PC1, by both its network name, and IP address, from PC2. I seem to get a loopback response on PC2, something along the lines of PCS(IP address):destination host unreachable. The same can be achieved when pinging PC2 from PC1.

Is there something different within Win7 that I am not aware of, that in WinXP things are easier?? I have tried ipconfig /flushdns, release, renew. Everything I can think of, I just can't get it to work through...

No, I have not assigned anything static to any of the computers, however I have thought about it. As I said before I have tried to ping each PC from each other. I get what seems to be a loopback error.

And I would like to say that these two are sitting physically side by side. And yes all the firewalls are disabled, one doesn't even have a anti virus on it. The other is AVG pro 9

Both computers ping the router just fine obviously they can ping the router if the route print shows it.
All the computers on the network that receive a IP from the host router, can ping the router just fine, and receive DHCP from it dynamically. I also see the computers from the router and ping them from the router. There is no firewall on the network at as of now.

EDIT: something really weird just happened, before they couldn't ping each other and all of a sudden I could get replies. However still I can't see each other

I will be perfectly honest with you....

If you are talking about the WRT160 v2 Routers...
Those are very faulty Firmware...
I "HAD" one and I had to go out and buy a completely different router becuase my network was not stable.

Wireless-N Gigabit RouterWRT310Nv2

That is what I am using now.

I am not saying go out and buy a new router but what I am saying is that I have had lots of problems with the router that you are using now.

My suggestion is try to borrow another router if you can....
and retry the setup and see what the outcome is

I can def confirm that the WRT160N is v1, and I have two router both with a aftermarket firmware, and work great, the issue is the same with both of them

Yeah actually... i would love to use the DD wrt on my router but i have the version 2. That is still work in progress.

I was trying so bad at best buy to get the version 1 of my router but linksys really doesn't mark the outside of their boxes too well.

I was checking out your CMD config... looks like you have your NetBIOS enabled. I would just not enable that since that is a lost cause protocol. They haven't used that since like Windows ME. *lol*

I see in your configuration that is saids "Hybrid" that is one indication.

If you would like. I stil lhave about an hour before I have to go.

If you would like. I could do a desktop only MSN chat TEAMVIEW with you. We can just go through your settings one by one.

I have homegroup enabled but i mostly work on workgroup. May I ask what your trying to do? I figured this.. One we get IPv4 up and running IPv6 is a snap.

I am totally for that, however I will be away from my home office until about 8 CST, can we work something out? I am currently at the office at work.

I noticed that as well, I don't know where the Hybrid came from, I tried to go through the system and attempt to make it a classic sharing environment. However to no avail I have learned Windows 7 is a different beast.

I would like everything to be in same work workgroup and be able to share each others resources within the trusted workgroup. I am not really versed in the IPv6 however IPv4 in the past I could make stand on its head.

I have tried using the Work Network feature, and the Home Network feature. I know that both devices are in the workgroup WORKGROUP. I would static assign the on the network, however I would like take the laptop away from the home environment and be able to use it without having to reassign it to proper networks.

This morning, the laptop actually saw the PC for a second there, and I was able to access the external drive I have shared on the PC. But that connection was lost shortly after..

I would like everything to be in same work workgroup and be able to share each others resources within the trusted workgroup. I am not really versed in the IPv6 however IPv4 in the past I could make stand on its head.

I have tried using the Work Network feature, and the Home Network feature. I know that both devices are in the workgroup WORKGROUP. I would static assign the on the network, however I would like take the laptop away from the home environment and be able to use it without having to reassign it to proper networks.

This morning, the laptop actually saw the PC for a second there, and I was able to access the external drive I have shared on the PC. But that connection was lost shortly after..

I am on Eastern Standard time...I'll be home later tonight and up all night.
I'll be home about 945pm


For you to keep a static IP and move your laptop... you could also setup your RESERVED dynamic IPs in your router.

you just set your MAC address to the IP address you want so when you log in with your laptop it will automaticallly pull that IP and that IP alone.

and if you have a desktop that doesn't move, you can just force your static ip on that one.

so just let me know when a good time is for you and we can go page by page on windows 7. Since you have windows 7 on each, we can just do one computer and just mimic it on the other one... saves time

I have homegroup enabled but i mostly work on workgroup. May I ask what your trying to do? I figured this.. One we get IPv4 up and running IPv6 is a snap.

I am totally for that, however I will be away from my home office until about 8 CST, can we work something out? I am currently at the office at work.

Whats your MSN?

I like that idea, I did not think about that, I can def put the MAC address in the IP pool of the router, and we can do that later tonight.

Well tonight is my buddies birthday, I am off at 4 I will be at the gym until 6, I will throw back a couple with him til about 8 so about 8:30 CST.

Yes both machines are Win7, and actually the third laptop will be also once, I get this issue resolved. I can static assign the PC no problem, as it wont move, and I am seriously considering the router suggestions.

It seems that all the security settings and a few others need to match up exactly or it won't work but thats about all I could find on this.
