Clicking means your drive is about to die. If you can, save what files you can on DVD data disk. Sometimes placing the actual drive in the freezer overnight and next morning reinserting it into the computer will give you enough time to retrieve everything.

But the clicking is the drive dying. You don't have much time.

I do hope you've been backing up regularly.

Yes, that is the so called"Click of Death" and they will fail soon. With so many drives doing this perhaps it would be a good idea to see what or if you are doing something to cause it.

If it's laptop don't drop it when laying it down, the drive may still be running and they are a 100 times more sensitive to shock.

If the desktop, take similar care while installing. Many can withstand a 150G shock but only foe a few micro-seconds. Get replacements for the bad one(s), sell them and try another brand.

Well in that case you could:
1. Buy a new drive now and save your data.
2. Buy an external USB drive to store data.
3. Burn the data to DVDs, but that may take alot of disks.

Freezing may help with a screeching/grinding drive (and has for me) but not that I know of with a clicking drive else I would have got all the lost images off my 3 dead drives.

OP I assume you are referring to a relatively loud click with spin ups between each one and not just the quiet rumble of seeking drive heads?

Check you BIOS Hardware tab and see what the voltages are for 12V, 5V, and 3.3V. They should be +/- 5% of those values.

We-l-l-l-l, reboot and somewhere during the process there will be a list of keys to press to enter setup or something like that. Many board use the Delete or F2 for this. When there read along the top, they are tabs you can cycle through with the arrow keys, pressing Enter will open menus/submenus up, ESC will take you back one step.

You will be looking for a Hardware or Hardware Monitor menu which is where the volts will be listed. Write them down and post back. When all done press F10 and Discard Changes, it will boot into Windows.
