I replaced a dead hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5110. I replaced an old disk hard drive for a SSD a Samsung ssd 840 Series.
When I booted up with the original Dell Windows 7 reinstall CD I got to the screen where it asks me where I want to install Windows. I have three options offered, Disk 0 Partion 1: EFI (200MB 181MB Free space system type) or Dist 0 Partition 2 (232.1GB, 0 free space, Primary Type) or Disk 0 Partition 3 (619 MB total size, 0 Free Space, primary Type)
So, where to install? And why does it say that the new hard drive has 0 free space?
I have the option to Refresh, Delete, Format, Load Driver or Extend. There is an option for New, but nothing happens when I try to click on that.
So, there is a message that says that windows cannot be installed on any of these partitions.
I tried putting in the drivers disk and tried to find HD drivers, but it did not like the drivers it found.
What to do? I was told that windoes does not care about the new drivers and would install with the install CD no problem.
So, can you help?
Thanks,
Michael

Of those 3 partitions:

EFI
Partition 2
Partition 3

you should install to Partition 2.

I'm not sure why it says 0 free space.

Do you have any other drive connected?

What's the history of this Samsung SSD? Brand new out of the box? Previously used for something and if so, what? Do you care at all about anything on it?

Then I would DELETE all partitions.

That should make it "unallocated space".

You should be able to continue from that point.

Make sure no other drives are connected.
