Hi everyone, I have a big problem:

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM today and I really hated the fugly WMP12, so I tried to revert back to WMP11, but somehow I terribly failed.
WMP is now saying that it's not correctly installed and I should reinstall it. I asks me if I want to visit the Microsoft site to download a new installer, but when I do, I am presented with a download link to WMP 6.4 for Windows NT 4. That can't be right...

Anyone know how I can get my WMP working again(I don't care if it's WMP11 or 12, as long as it is WMP).

Thanks.

OK so I can assume you dont have a backup to restore from, right? do you have the "WIN 7" dvd, to do a repair install?

first the safest easiest thing to do is to run a system file check to verify and fix your system files. to do it you go to start>search>type cmd>right click and run as admin>type sfc /scannow and tell us the results

It ended without any prompt, so I assume that everything was ok(I let it scan in the background and after >5 minutes the icon in the taskbar dissapeared).
I did not get any error messages.

you might want to run it again because it cant fix all the files in one run, and at the end before you close the cmd window check to see what it says

THIS WILL BRING BACK WMP12

1. Open start and type "turn fea" then hit enter.
2. A window will open, deselect 'Windows Media Player' (as shown)
View attachment 29792
Note: Deselecting WMP will require you to allow it to deselect WMC.

3. Press OK, restart.
4. Repeat step 1, then reselect 'Windows Media Player' (as shown)
View attachment 29793
Note: If you want to use WMC you will need to reselect that as well.

5. Select OK, restart again, see if its back to WMP 12.

MS didn't put WMP11 in Windows 7 for a reason, try finding a way to get WMP 12 in the taskbar instead of getting WMP 11 in Windows 7.

I copied/pasted this from a post I made on another thread. Hope it helps.

I let sfc /scannow scan again and it said it had not found any breach of integrity(in Dutch).

I will now try the method DarkNova posted.

I've got past disabling WMP and rebooting, now I've enabled WMP again, but it seems like it's hanging now, the progess bar is full, I don't see nothing happening, there is also no harddisk activity.
I see now prompt asking me to reboot...
Is it supposed to take this long(over 5 minutes now)?

It can vary from computer to computer, if its asking you to reboot then go ahead.

Hmm shouldn't be taking that long. I'll try it myself to see if it takes that long.

UPDATE: It finished in the time it took me to go to the bathroom, so I do not know why it is taking you so long. Try restarting and seeing if its deselected or not?

I've tried the whole process again, this time rebooting twice and deleting the Media Player directory before enabling it again. The icon didn't show by default in the taskbar, but the program is present in Program Files (x86), and Program Files.

The strange thing is, when I execute wmplayer.exe from the (x86) directory, it fails, but when I open it from the 64 bit Program Files, it opens just fine.
Even stranger is the fact that if I try to execute the (x86) version again, when the 64 bit version is running, my screen just focusses on the already present WMP window, as if it's the same exe.
If I leave it running and double click an mp3 file, it will play.
If I doubleclick and mp3 when WMP is not running, I get the error, even when selecting "open with" and manually trying to open it with the 64 bit WMP.

I just installed Windows 7 for 48 hours and I already broke it lol...

Not meaning to sound like an ass, but that is what happens when you try to do something that isn't designed to be done.

I managed to get myself glitched up in the 'deleting/reinstalling' part of Windows Features. Though I accidentally REselected WMP before restarting (So basically I deselected it, had it removed, then opened it back up forgetting to restart because I said not right now and reselected it and now it thinks its installed but not actually installed >.> my brain hurts).

ALSO If you do not mind doing it since you've only had it installed for 48 hours, you can just do another clean install and it will fix this problem completely and any possible side effects. :p

That would be an option...
It did took me a while installing my Adobe Master Suite and Autodesk 3DS Max, but I guess there's no other way...

Maybe I'll call Microsoft support tomorrow, to see what they have to say.

On a second thought...

Would it be an option to just reinstalling Windows 7 on top of the original installation, that would let me keep my installed programs right? And it would have a chance of restoring my WMP installation, right?
