i can not play any avi

every time i try to play any avi this happens

i scanned my drivers & all appeared to be up 2 date any suggestions are even a fix

i mainly use vlc but this is also a windows player issue & XBMC when i open xbmc i get this error

1. Use this tutorial to restore any Media Extensions that may have been corrupted (in your case - avi).

2. Go to Control Panel, Default Programs, set VLC Media Player as Default.

3. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and then select Turn Windows features on or off.. Deselect Windows Media Player, press OK and Restart. Then run an SFC Scan to fix any issues Windows Media Player may have.

4. Restart again. Now uninstall any other Media Players you may have using Revo Uninstaller and install VLC Media Player.

5. Now go back to Control Panel, Programs and Features and then select Turn Windows features on or off. Now select Windows Media Player, and press OK following another Restart.

6. Now ensure VLC Media Player is set as the default media player using Step 1.

Now try playing a .avi via VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player.

What is your file association for .avi. And have you tried 'Open with .." and selected VLC. It usually plays anything. And where did those .avi files come from. Maybe they have special tweak to them. You can run them theu e.g. Format Factory (.avi to .avi) and see whether they get reformatted. If Format Factory gives you an error, then something is wrong with the files.

lol no everything plays

freaking weird if you ask me didn't do nothing to fix it just started up my pc toke a sec. longer then normal but just treid it and all videos seem to work fine
even wmc works & xbmc

are you talking about what does it open with if i just double click it?

Sometimes a reboot helps. Must have been a minor hickup. Normally one does just double click on the file. Then it opens with the default player. But if you want another player, you go to 'Open with ..' where you can also change the default player (for this filetype) when you go to 'Choose default program'. That is easier than wrestling with the filetype associations.
