Hello,

I'm new to the forum so my apologies for any mistakes. Over a year ago I brought a new laptop with Windows 8. Of course, I wanted to have windows 7 on so found out how to downgrade. Now, a year later, I believe i have done something wrong as I am now being told my windows is not activated (Build 7601) and that the version of Windows I have is Ultimate (which if I downgraded correctly it shouldn't be).

I still have the Windows 8 OEM licence code stored on the BIOS. I was wondering if anyone can help me either:

Correctly activate Windows 7 from where I am now and without having to rebuild my laptop?

OR

Update to a legitimate version of Windows 8 using my OEM licence so that I can then get the free upgrade to Windows 10?

I really would prefer not to rebuild my computer from scratch

Thank you for any help

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ne-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Here is the copy of the report. The only sticker on my laptop just says Windows 8 with no activation code or anything, but the code is in my BIOS. I think I found out that I could legitimately downgrade to Windows 7 but then followed illegitimate instructions for it

A downgrade is only available to machines which came pre-installed with Windows 8 Pro. It is also ONLY available a Professional, not Ultimate.
It looks to me like your machine shipped with 'Core' Windows 8 rather than Pro, and so doesn't have the proper bits for the downgrade to work - which anyhow requires that you use the proper Manufacturer's Recovery media.

You need to reformat and reinstall with genuine media and Key

And there is absolutely no way to get from where I am now to a legitimate version of windows using my product key without reformatting and reinstalling?

Not one that I'd care to recommend, at least. It involves hacking the Ultimate install to downgrade it to Pro. Some people appear to have used it without problems, but I tend to distrust such approaches.
