Did you see all the errors under 'Event Viewer"? There is just no way I would keep working on a machine that was throwing up an error at everything like these!

==== Event Viewer Messages From Past Week ========

Do you need a tutorial on how to do a 'clean' install? Or what are you asking me?

Yeah clean install would without a doubt fix the problem. Here are a couple other tools to try that are widely known as very good freeware. The first is "Revouninstaller." Link>Download Revo Uninstaller 1.89 Free - An innovative uninstall utility with many additional cleaning tools included. - Softpedia.....Anyone who knows even a little bit about computers has to have this tool. It is an uninstaller, yes. But it allows you to do Advanced levels of how you want to uninstall something. Giving you your standard pc uninstall, (uninstalls same as your pc does, leaving file fragments behind). But gives you a couple of other removal ways too. Very easy I should ad. But these other ways lets you uninstall and get rid of absolutely everything to do with that program you want gone. Including Profiles, Registry, ect....And also has a great junk file cleaner too. I use it everyday. And the second Tool (maybe you've heard of it), is called "CCleaner." Link>CCleaner - Download Another awsome freeware app, that one who knows anything about computers, can tell you about. It is an awesome de-junker. I mean for everything. Just make sure you choose what you want it to clean (such as browser cookies, temp files, and you can choose any part of nearly all of your apps you want it to clean, with little check boxes). Anyway, It has a good registry error tool too, that checks your registry for errors, then gives you the option to "auto fix" them (which will be a lot. I do it every day and always have a few errors). So get and run ccleaner registry clean tool first. And From now on, use "Revouninstaller" to uninstall apps from now on. It'll keep your comp way cleaner, and less cluttered with those pointless left-over files. You may have to end up clean installing anyway. But both these are apps good enough to be one of the first things you download on any fresh OS, trust me.

A registry cleaner is not going to solve the problems on 05dgarner's computer. In fact, in more cases than not, registry cleaners do more damage that good. This is particularly true with Windows 7. Developers of registry cleaners do not have the core code of Windows 7 and are not working on definitive information, but rather they are going on past knowledge and experience. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.

Modifying registry keys incorrectly can cause Windows instability, or make Windows unbootable. No registry cleaner is completely safe and the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix. Registry cleaners cannot distinguish between good and bad. If you run a registry cleaner, it will delete all those keys which are obsolete and sitting idle; but in reality, those keys may well be needed by some programs or Windows at a later time.

Windows 7 is much more efficient at managing the registry than previous Windows versions. If you are very knowledgeable of the registry, you can use CCleaner to delete keys left over when uninstalling programs. However, these few keys will not make 1 millisecond's difference in performance. If you run CCleaner or any other registry cleaner and do not know precisely what you are doing, you will have problems down the road. There are no gains to be had from using a registry cleaner and the risk is great.

Forget all the "wisdom" you learned about XP. Windows 7 is not XP and does not manage the registry the same as XP.

Are registry cleaners necessary?

Back up the registry

I can agree on that. It isn't easy trying to explain registry fixes, rather than having the comp right there in front of you. I also noted, to make sure you only select what you want to delete. But you can't argue with Revo uninstaller. As far as simplicity goes. And for the average user, lets them totally uninstall programs, instead of leaving the reg and folder info ect..behind. I should've thought before I posted. And yes. Windows 7 is really good about fixing itself. I'd go clean install if it were me. But not everyone backs up their files just about every month. I've learned my lesson well. He'll get it fixed. Finding the problem's the hard part.
