I just turned on my hardware firewall in my wireless router (Sagemcom SE567) and it apparently is preventing Outlook from checking emails. What do I need to do in order that Outlook can pull mail from the server but keep my firewall on?

You will need to use port forwarding for the protocol and port number to your machines network IP see here or it may be possible to add an exception for outlook in the routers firewall interface.
