Windows 7 64 bit will run just fine on 2 gigs of RAM. However, I would recommend sticking with 32 bit for you. 64 bit uses more resources, and you may have a harder time finding drivers. If you have 4 gigs or more, you will need to get 64 bit.

Rule of thumb: If you have to ask about 64 bit usage, you probably don't need it and it will not offer any benefits to you.

It will run, just not do half the things you want 64bit for in the first place. Win 7 will cache almost 1 gig, and open IE, or firfeox, and the rest will be gone. Forget about gaiming, or mutliple apps.

32 or 64? Very subjective and there is not right or wrong answer. For me I really do not need 64, now. But, it is the wave of the future. MS is already talking about Win8 and it may come out in just 64 bit. I have already seen mention of 128 bit. I have 64 and have no problem with drivers etc.
Bottom line I recommend 64.

Since RAM is relatively cheap, 4gig is fast becoming the standard. At any Rate, having ran/run both Vista x64 and Windows x64 I would put it this way with regards to RAM, I would feel much better running Windows 7 x64 on 2 gig of RAM then Vista x64.

I've been running Windows 7 x64 for about 3 weeks now and it runs much smoother than Vista x64. In fact since moving to Windows 7 Ultimate x64, I've yet to go into Vista Ultimate x64.

I have 4 hard drives in my system, but 3 of the HD's contain their own OS (XP, Vista, W7) so all OS' run under the same specs. I simply go in the BIOS and choose which HD (OS) I want to boot from. But like I said, since running W7 I haven’t looked back.

As for 4 gig or less RAM? 32 or 64-bit would do well, however a 64-bit OS would utilize all 4gig of your RAM, whereas a 32-bit OS would use 3.5 gig at most. If you have a 1 gig video card, then the 32-bit OS would use 3gig of system RAM and the 1 gig of video RAM, thus you would actually lose system RAM in favor of Video RAM. Windows will always give priority to video RAM.

Another factor you need to consider is software and hardware requirements. Do your research here before even considering a 64-bit OS as not all software/hardware is up to snuff when it comes to 64-bit compatibility, and upgrading software/hardware could be costly.

Just something to think about ;)

I honestly don't think for most home use...the performance difference between 32 and 64 bit is almost unnoticeable. I know people rave about how much faster it is...but i certainly don't see it....with the exception of the small number of 64-bit apps which are also disk and processor intensive.

I was sorta in your spot. I decided to get 2gb and add that in. So total of 4gb now. It ran fine with 2gb tho, but I did notice a difference with 4. My O/S is also 64bit, I couldn't tell you the difference. As far as drivers go, Windows7 installed 95% of what I needed on the first installation, then the rest via updates, I had to find a HP printer 64bit driver, that was no problem. Getting my motherboard to recognize all 4gb of Ram was the only issue. But that got figured out eventually.

I would do a clean install of Windows 7 whatever you decide. Sounds like there are several ways to install Windows. ?? Yes there are. Upgrading and such. Don't do that. Back your stuff up, pictures or whatever, then do a "Clean install".
