Alright, I recently installed new ram in my dell precision T5400.
It came with 2GB already installed but I decided it was time for an upgrade. I installed the ram and followed all the steps I went onto my system and found out it said Installed memory (RAM) 6.00 GB (2.00 GB usable) Also when I start up my computer it says:

Alert! Memory configuration mismatch!
Please enter Setup Memory Info details.
Strike the F1 key to continue. F2 to run the setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics

-

I then press F2 and look at my memory it says

---------------------------------------------------------------
Memory Slot--Size----ECC-----Rank---Type- Organization
DIMM 1--------1GB-----Yes------1------FBD------X8
DIMM 2--------4GB-----Yes------1------FBD------X4
DIMM 3--------1GB-----Yes------1------FBD------X8
DIMM 4 EMPTY
DIMM 5 EMPTY
DIMM 6 EMPTY
DIMM 7 EMPTY
DIMM 8 EMPTY

Ignore the ' - ', it was the only way for separating it.

My Processor information: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5410@ 2.33GHz 2.33 GHz

Thanks!

Thirty-two bit cannot use all 4gigs without a special instruction set. Yours probably saw 3.25 gigs and the other missing RAM is probably for shared memory on the video card.

It is perfectly normal and there isnt anything you can do in 32 bit. You could upgrade to 64 to utilize the added RAM but 64 bit uses more resources so the move would probably be a wash. See the snip of my system. I have 4 gigs installed and my system can only see 3.3 of it

Is this the solution to my problem?

Whilst you are correct regards regards the 32 bit limitations I suspect your issue is that you have a matched pair running in dual channel mode and you have tried to add a single stick which will not run in dual channel as there is only one, I think the organization column indicates this

So you are saying it takes two at once? Sorry for not being as technical as I am pretty new to this stuff. So should I purchase a 64 bit processor and 64 bit windows 7?

I look on another article and saw this: No, there's no point because 64-bit windows will not run on a 32-bit only CPU.

ETA: now, if they actually have a 64-bit platform (Intel Core/Core2, Pentium 4/D with EM64T, or AMD Athlon 64 or Opteron) then yeah, as long as there are 64-bit drivers for everything you can switch over the OS.

Found the following info that addresses a similar problem:

Problem, you are Mix-Matching RAM in the same primary channel.
Use CPU-z and look at the JEDEC 'SPD' tab of all the slots

CPU-z -> http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

softwares-cpuz-05.jpg

You need to see if there is one column for all three slots that shows the same information. You may then have to go back into the BIOS to set the timings manually if they are not set to what you see.

I recently upgraded my memory from 1066 to 1600 and, using the info from CPU-Z, went into my BIOS to change the memory speed to 1600.

Also, I discovered a "patch" that allowed the PAE kernel to actually work on Win8 so that now, I can use all 8GB of memory in my 32-bit install. If you're interested, then let me know and I'll pass along the info. But, be sure to make an image backup of your install first, so that you can restore it if the patch goes badly.

You have to have the ram in the correct slots to run in dual channel, with only 3 sticks in it may not run in DC, consult the MB manual.

I would most definitely install 64 bit, after all you have 8 memory slots ;) and a Xeon :D

I would of though a manufacture would only put a 32 bit os on a laptop for better battery life :/
Doesn't make much sense on a desktop ?
Cheers.

Actually I already had CPU-Z installed. For my slot one which seems to be working off that slot because I changed my ram layout around and put my 4GB in DIMM one and 1gb in DIMM 2 another Gb in DIMM 3. On my slot one it says JEDEC #1 Frequency 333MHz, Cas# Latency 0.5, RAS#to Cas# 5, Ras# precharge 5, tRAS 15 and tRC 20. That do any help? Now I swapped my ram around I have 3.25GB usable.

If I had that machine I would install 64 bit 7, your existing key would work and load up those ram sockets with matching ram say 32 or 64gb. That would be an awesome workstation. I have a T3400 with 4 GB of ram and it is a good system. The precision models are the best systems made by Dell.

Don't get carried away man - the OP has had enough trouble getting 1 extra stick working. How would spending half a grand on RAM make that old Xeon go any faster ?

My first thought is putting the large RAM stick in the first slot (closest to processor). If you are saying you did this and OS now sees 3.25gb RAM - all that can be expected to be seen in 32 bit - then the next thing I would do is Clean Reinstall Windows 7 with 64 bit Win7 for your same licensed version.

Everything needed to get and keep a perfect install is in the blue link.

Yes, I saw it. Did you see my advice?

You need a 64 bit install, so follow Clean Reinstall Windows 7 to get it perfect, save a backup image after it's all set up and you'll never need to do it again. Now's your chance for the one great install.
