Hi, sorry I know that's probably a crap title but this just happened out of the blue as I was about to leave with my parents who were hassling me so I didn't get the chance to record much about it. It also happened while I was in the shower, I returned to find a blue screen with a load of warnings on it. I guess I should have taken a photo of it, but I didn't. I have no idea whatsoever what might have caused this. I was just after sharing a dongle with an old Vista machine that probably doesn't have any viruses on it but thought it might be related to that..?

Anyway I followed the instructions from this page and ran the SF diagnostic tool. Have attached the folder to this post. I also ran an sfc /scannow on the way here which highlighted no problems and also a quick scan with MSE, also no problems.

I have had no problems with my machine at all until this, but I am pleased that it seems to be a common problem and that you guys have this very comprehensive web site to offer help. You guys are a great help, you really are.

I have all my photos backed up now but I nearly lost some. Should probably get my Steam game saves backed up too.

Anyway, if anyone can take a look at the zipped folder I attached and let me know if there are any issues I need to deal with I'd really appreciate it.

Hi my machine less than a year old but it was an ex display model. I should have the most up to date Nvidia drivers, I think because I play a lot of games from Steam and it usually always installs new drivers. I did have to turn off DX 11 to play Deus Ex recently though.

I'm a bit busy just now, but if you think that I need to address this by installing something from those links you posted I will do that and get back to you as soon as I can. Might cancel the full virus check and get onto that.

I've been meaning to run puran defrag again but I want to clean some files of my C Drive first. Will get that done as soon as, not a good time to have issues right now lol at least it is still working. I guess if I don't tackle this now it might crash again right? I have to pop out not for a bit will look at this again when I come back, thanks for the help.

If you run Puran, it will not harm anything, Puran is a trustworthy program :)

Let us know the situation after updating the display driver, ok? :)

OK I updated the drivers, can't believe how out of date they were!

Had some problems with games crashing recently so maybe this was the reason why, I will report back soon as to how that goes. I had to turn off DX 11 to run Deus Ex: Human Revolution but will turn it back on and see if it runs any better now.

Also checked my WEI before and after and this was the result. I gained 0.1 for graphics and gaming graphics, from 6.6 to 6.7:D

Yes I've been using it a lot, it's very good. I just wanted to delete some files from my HD before doing it that's all, makes more sense to do that. I do a lot of photography and digital design and it can get a bit disorganised.

Still haven't checked out the games but my brightness function has gone a bit wonky, flashes bright when you change it and seems to reset too bright. It's going bright dark bright dark now, only just noticed this when I turned the light off. Solved the problem for now by covering the light sensor that is underneath the screen.

Help. BSOD again!

My computer is an utter mess right now. I tried to clean it up, did a full reinstall and it just ended up going the same way again. Fan is noisy and always on. I recently uninstalled an AMD core optimiser which is strange because I have an intel pcoressor, something to do with Steam games, I thinking about just getting rid of that.

Anyway, doing a spot of gardening and keep coming back in to find this.

Ok so I finally got round to running this diagnostic program, been really busy. It hasn't BSOD's since this time, but it just locks up all the time. I'm fed up with it. Trying to back up and orgaqnise my data, lots of datas and I'm going through some photoshop work, opening large jpg files in windows photo viewer and this hasn't worked well for some time. Large files >50MB (which my computer should be easily able to cope with!) just lock everything up, thumbnails take ages to sharpen as well.

It really is quite unworkable, so I need to get to the botom of this.

Anyway I ran Short Drive Self Test, Short Generic Test and Long Generic Test and it failed on Long Generic. Stopped at 6% and just said failed. So I'm not sure what to do next.

Is this repairable?

I'm planning on reinstalling everything from the disk image again, and getting rid of some stuff, mainly Steam games. What's the best thing to do from here, and is my HDD broke?

About repairability, as far as I know, Seatools can repair Seagate and Maxtor brand discs only. Unfortunately I am not aware (that definitely does not mean it is really not there, it only refers to my lack of knowledge) of any way that can repair Hitachi discs. So I will not be able to help you with the repair.

If I have been in your place, I would have replaced the hard disc in this situation.

Replacing isn't an option right now, although I could run it from an ext drive. I'd also like to replace the fan but these machines are welded shut.

I don't understand what needs repaired, is it not something that a full system reinstall would solve?

The disc fails because of bad sectors mostly, and some other reasons. Those may be attempted to repair, but the attempts cannot guarantee for a repair.

Usually formatting cannot do the job. But who knows what will happen there for you. You may give it a go as you want.

If not repaired and/or not replaced, the BSODs (and some other issues, which will increase gradually over time) are supposed to continue.

Is there no way to just segregate the bad sectors? What if I defrag it would that not identify bad sectors and leave them data free?

I don't understand why this can cause the BSOD, would it not cause some of my date to be corrupted? So far I have seen no evidence of that, just a slow performance. It's been like this for the past year and a half, for two years this thing ran seamlessly then one day I inadvertently download some malware from some free software and it's been like this ever since.

I had the same thing with my old macbook for years, nothing but problems and coudl never get to the bottom of it, it now looks like the same thing is happening with this. Computer seriously do my head in.

And the fan as well is so noisy, especially when gaming or sometimes it'l just go nuts, sounds like a hoover. Had the same thing with my mac for years, incessantly noisy fan.

Another constant problem is shutting down and restarting, there are always processes running in the background and I have to force them to shut down or else it takes ages.

I reran the WEI and it dropped down 0.1 on graphics and gaming graphics.

Think you could be right and I might have to consider the possibility of buying a new HDD, or whatever it is wrong with this thing. Once I've organised and backup up all my data and attended my first therapy session on how to overcome data hoarding, I'm going to reinstall it from the recovery disk and take it from there.

Any kind of serious work I do on it design or photography basically goes along the lines of an hours work, or less before it just locks up and I have to turn it off at the power. It's not like the fan is going mental and it slows down because there is so much data running the processor (8 core i7 by the way) it just goes silent and nothing happens, it just locks up and wont work.

I can't deal with this problem anymore I had it for years on my mac, and if there's one thing that turns me into the incredible hulk it's staring at a computer waiting for it respond when I've got a thousands ideas flowing through my head and I want to get them done.

Maybe someone will kindly point me in the right direction of possibly running it off an external drive, or a USB or card?

This machine was an ex display model, got a good deal on it but maybe not if the price to pay is hardware failing after 3 years, I don't know how long they keep them on display for.

That said, a restart always sorts it out and it is only after I churn so much data through it, photos or whatever that it slows down so that would suggest to me it's a software issue? I'm hoping Win 10 fixes some of these issues. I don't know if I trust that diagnostic program, I mean I am not ruling the possibility that it might get it wrong some of the time.

An update just completely messed up my system last night, and I have spent the day factory reseting my machine. Been meaning to get round to this for ages.

I just ran the seatools for windows long generic test on my HDD and it has just reached 10%, whereas before it was failing at 6% all the time, so I'm about to find out if my HDD really is failing.

If I have been in your place, I would have replaced the hard disc in this situation.

Just as well I didn't go down that road then because I don't think that was the cause of the problem. I just finally got round to reinstalling everything from a factory reset and my computer is working fine, no more noisy fan, large files opening up faster in photo viewer, no more locking up, no more (not responding) and it passes the long generic test now.

So yeah, no disrespect but that was lousy advice, I very nearly spent £50 on a new disk drive and opened this thing up and replaced the old one when in fact it wasn't necessary at all.
