My PC is a basic Dell OptiPlex 760 SFF PC with Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz 750GB 4GB DVDRW WiFi. As you can see, it's nothing special but it was cheap enough and it does all the things that I want it to do such as checking for bargains on eBay, reading up on forums, Facebook and other social networking sites. It also lets me indulge in my passion of playing on-line poker at Pokerstars.com. So here's the thing. I was recently brought to my attention, and I may have got this totally wrong, that I may be entitled to a free download of Windows 8.1. Now, the thing is, if I had a touch screen computer, I could maybe see the benefit of upgrading. But I don't have such a screen so, if the free upgrade is genuine, are there any real advantages to upgrading from Windows 7 Pro 64 bit to Windows 8.1?
Also, while I'm here can anyone either confirm or deny the idea of a free upgrade?
Cheers,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

If we talk about upgrading from 7 to 8, (and this is my personal opinion) you won't get the best out of your OS if you do that. Win 7 is way better and bug free than Win 8.

Regarding the free upgrade, it is COMPLETE SCAM. Don't even click that option.

Here's something you might want to read regarding the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8. Obviously you have to buy Win 8 first. ;)

Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 - Microsoft Windows

The simple answer in regards to upgrading to Windows 8.x is no. I have both Windows 7.x and Windows 8.x on different systems, neither of them have a touch screen, my personal experience has Win 7 as the better choice.

YMMV

I think it is a personal choice, but also think a 'free upgrade' is a scam. But it is a personal choice whether you would like windows 8.1 better than Windows 7. I have 7, 8 and 8.1. Personally, I always use Windows 7. However, there are people here who use 8 and love it. I say more power to them and I'm happy for them. It just isn't for me. I would suggest though, if you want Windows 8 or 8.1, to buy it. Don't fall for some scam.

Thanks very much for your input, Guys.
Maybe it's a case of "Sticking with the Devil you know," lol
I think I may be best suited just staying with Win 7, at least for now, anyway.
I'll maybe check out that 8.1 option in more detail before I go any further. In fact, maybe it was a free update from Win 8 to Win 8.1 and not from Win 7 to Win 8.1. I must admit to being a bi of a klutz when reading about free stuff, lol
