I keep getting random BSOD! What is the cause and how can it be fixed?

As the title shows, I keep getting random BSOD. I'm not entirely sure what happens. Normally I find that when I return home from school/work my laptop is off. I reboot it and "Resume Windows" and I get a pop-up that says "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" Please tell me what is happening, what the cause is, and how it can be fixed.
