Question / Query 1

Hi, I really hope someone can help me with this problem and another issues.

After all these years, I’ve just got to the point of being able to leave Windows 7
Home Premium, 64bit, for the Windows 10 free download, hopefully within the
next two weeks.

Sometime ago, I had read that Microsoft checks the Product ID: to check it’s valid,
before allowing the download.

To my disbelief - when I opened ‘Control Panel/System’, that I’ve had no need to
do for such a long time, I found “Windows activation” didn’t have any details;

Status: NOT AVAILABLE
Product ID: NOT AVAILABLE

Is it possible that because Window 7 is now discontinued, that
the Status and Product ID isn’t relevant, and Microsoft
have removed from view or deleted the proof that it was valid?

But if that is the case, how does MS check that Win7 is valid to upgrade to Win10?

Many years ago, I made a copy of the Activation date AND Product ID
that I found today on Notepad.

But that’s not going to help me, because I read that MS check the
Product ID before allowing the download.

Everything must have been okay for Microsoft regarding this machine, because
I’ve received every 'monthly update' from day one that I always dealt with AND
since MS stopped support for Windows 7 the updates are only now and then.
Recently I’ve received a few MS updates, I didn’t check what they were for,I just accepted them. While jotting this down 14 April, I’ve just seen anotherwaiting for the machine to be restarted.

Question / Query 2
My machine (ASUS N73SV - Notebook) has two hard drive bays.
Until now, I have only ever used one bay.
But now I want to install a 2TB SSD for Windows 10
that I am hoping the SSD can be Partitioned
so I can keep other data & files separate.

So . . . Can SSD drives be Partitioned?

If so is the partition process the same as for a WD HD?

Question / Query 3

The other bay, is for a 2TB WD Blue drive.
I’ve never used SSD before, so I have no idea about this . . .
When I transfer lets say 2Gb from SSD to WD – how does a
WD regular hard drive, keep up/deal with the fast files trying to be written to it?
Or is that not possible?

Question / Query 4

I have found it difficult to confirm about the actualspeed of SATA on this machine.
SPECCY tells me Max Transfer Mode SATA II 3.0Gb/s
Used Transfer Mode SATA II 3.0Gb/s

But because ASUS had installed Windows 7 on 11 November 2011

I thought SSD would be SATA type: SATA-III 6.0Gb/s
that is as you’ll see is after May 27, 2009

I’ve left the SATA III revision details below, if it helps anyone.

SATA III revision 3.0 (6 Gbit/s, 600 MB/s)
SATA revision 3.0 (6 Gbit/s, 600 MB/s, Serial ATA-600)
Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) presentedthe draft specification of SATA 6 Gbit/s physical layer in July 2008,and ratified its physical layer specification on August 18, 2008.
The full 3.0 standard was released on May 27, 2009.

Been hanging on to Windows 7 that has had serious issues for
must be 4 years - before that it was working fine, and before that,
Windows XP Professional, and first Windows 95

please run these 2 tools, they will give us a clue as to whats going on inside

please check your battery compartment for your backup key, with a bit of luck we wont need it... the code you found is the default for all Asus W7 Home premium comps
(DO NOT POST IT)

As for the upgrade it looks at the Product Key..
MS DO NOT remove product keys and as ESU is still ongoing thier validation servers are still operational
Every user is still offered MSRT on a monthly basis

AFTER we have sorted the above
MAKE a system back-up with Macrium/Amoebi/EasUS all free

i would install your SSD's and secondary drive AFTER you have moved to W10
(swapping from hdd to ssd will NOT invalidate your new licence)


Its not really suprising your on SataII
Any drive can be partitioned...
we have plently of tutorials explaing this here and our sister W10 site

As you said the system has been playing up for about 4 years, and i looked at your earlier posts,
IT might be easier and quicker to do a clean install of W10
REMEMBER if you make this choice BACKUP your personal docs/pics first
the backup key will likely be required
and you wont need Avast... which was giving you problems

Thanks Roy, for taking the time out to explain all that.

I'll get on it as soon as I'm able.

I've just learnt things I never knew.

I've just copied all the instructions to Word,
I'll find that easier to have it side my side,
so I don't cock up.

If you make a backup image of your existing win7 installation, then you are covered.


If you would rather do a clean install of win10 instead of an "upgrade" install, you could use the gatherosstate method.
