I reinstalled windows 7 tonight and i did a intel chipset inf install before i installed the Intel Management program or whatever it is. When I came to the last screen of the install (it seem like it installed the inf files) my screen went black, all my fans went to like 100% and stayed there till i hard powered off. When I rebooted my bios said something like "You have failed an overclock, default bios values will be loaded" and then went back into windows without a problem.

It wouldnt let me reinstall the inf files on that OS installation (and i wasnt sure how to see if they were installed, i assumed they werent because of what happened), so I reinstalled windows 7 again. This time i made sure to install the Intel Management program before updating the chipset inf files, everything went fine then.

The only side effect I can see as far as the system behaving abnormally is that my DVD drive spins very loud now. Like jet engine loud almost. It definatly didnt do that before. Is there any way to fix it in a setting or do I need to replace it? And what if any other damage could be caused by a bad inf file install like mentioned above? Thanks.

edit: i just installed battlefield 3 from CD rom and it was QUIET as a tit mouse whispering in a library. I dont get how it can go to sounding like a jet engine when i had my Gigabyte driver CD in to barely any audible noise at all when im installing BF3 off disc, very weird.

TL DR : does doing a botched chipset inf installation cause any major damage to your computer?

Hi Tank.

As far of my knowledge, Intel chipset inf files won't do any harm to your system. If it incompatible it will prompt you during installation and have it aborted. If you can, try download the files from Gigabyte support site or if you are certain about the chipset series you can have it from Intel download site.

IF your DVD ROM spin up noisy, it can be caused by some problem with the disk. Try clean up the disk surface by wiping it inside out (do not wipe it in circle) or check if it has some deep scratches on it.

Hope that help a little

hi Kevin, thank you for responding. I wish it would of just prompted me instead of sending my system into a black screen, max rpm fan death spin :P A simple command prompt would of been much more plesant

I'm not sure if the blank screen is caused by Chipset inf files. There should be another thing
you mention about "You have failed an overclock, default bios values will be loaded"
Try to set first the BIOS to its default, especially the Processor clock. you can then set the overclock through Gigabyte utility program after finishing all basic installation.

The easiest way to check if your Chipset driver installed correctly is just by observing your device manager, if there is no exclamation mark on basic devices then it's OK.

Were you actually Overclocking before, or was the error you saw just indiscriminate? If you are overclocking, I would strongly urge you to not use any of the Gigabyte Softclocking utilities. If you want to overclock your pc, learn how to do it correctly, through the BIOS.

Hi,

does doing a botched chipset inf installation cause any major damage to your computer?

Nope, maybe errors or a BSOD. You can always restore the installation though.

my DVD drive spins very loud now. Like jet engine loud almost. It definatly didnt do that before. Is there any way to fix it in a setting or do I need to replace it?

Try checking the drive with a couple of different discs. It may just be having trouble reading some discs. , possibly due to scratches and stuff. You could also consider a Firmware update for the drive to see if it makes a difference.

Good advice James.

More about overclocking, if I mentioned the native program from Gigabyte means that there are some configuration in combining all aspects related to it already guarded. The Advantage is that we can set it back at anytime while running hot.
Setting it in BIOS need proper or a bit advance knowledge in combining the clock ratio among the board, processor, and GPU.

But if looking at the spec own by Tank's Gigabyte system, I don't think he needs any overclock. His system is sufficient to run most games in standard clock ratio. Overclocking will push processor to dissipate more heat which need best cooling system, it comes also with the GPU. But for the board, it definitely unsecured as board have no better way to cope with overheat problem. :(

So at the end I would recommend to stay with standard configuration, or if doing little overclock, make sure to monitor all all related indicator.

I will say no to aggressive overclock as it too risky without proper assistance (even best online assistance isn't) recommended). :)

Why are you installing the Intel chipset? Were there performance problems or missing chipset drivers after the drivers provided by the Win7 installer and then updated via optional Windows Updates, after getting all updates installed?

This is not XP. Win7 is the authority on its own drivers and is driver-complete in the installer and via optional Windows Updates. Rarely are there more than a few drivers which need provided after this, from the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

I would start over and follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which are the same for retail.

i had no overclock done, the bios was almost compeletly stock except for memory timings i changed to match the manufacturers recommended timings
