Great! The 60D is a nice high end camera. Avoid the temptation to run out and buy lenses until you see what you really need, if any. :)

@Heyyou I was going to get the 600D, with the twin lens and the store had a special deal, but it ended and now the price is something like $1349! So now I'm going for the 60D, with the single lens. It's around $1000. I like the swivelly screen, it looks like my video camera screen! I'll try not to get tempted with lenses, but they're expensive, so... I'll probably stick to the kit lens! :D
I've never used a DSLR before. It seems very exciting!

Enjoy the manual. The one they issue is probably a small hard to read thing. I got a book version from Barnes and Noble that I could sit back with and read. I bought a Sony for various reasons, and like it. :)

Is this the same as the 3ti rebel in the US--I think so and I got myself that over xmas to replace a 1st gen rebel. Oh I got a slew of lenses too. A 50mm prime, a 12-24 wide angle, and a 500 telephoto.

Also some ND filters.

Learn the basics first yeah...but then tools ARE required to get photos similar to what one sees in magazines.

Just remember lens are all about the glass and it's not cheap, wait research understand the types of shots that interest you then ask experts and then save, save, save. Close up, Wide Angle, Normal, Mid and Long Tele's they are all crazy expensive for the back glass. Have fun as I'm sure the stock glass is at least good but the moment you snap a premium lens in is when your shots will transform. Understand my interest and knowledge comes from my Canon 35's and I just can't make this same investment in Digital yet so I envy you......enjoy and filters YES !

If I remember right, the D60 is more complicated than the Rebel and is used more by news photographers. As mentioned, his is about $1,000, and the 3Ti Rebel is about $700 or so I think. My Brother in Law has one and loves it! :)

If you don't have a G+ account, get one and search out the photography interests and photographers there. It's about the ONE THING that G+ is good for :D The photographers/photography section has really exploded there. With free hosting for unlimited photos (well for now, it sucked up picasa).

Remember not to transpose the model numbers.
The Canon D60 is an old camera from the early 2000's, the 60D is the current Canon lower high end camera.
Nikon started to use the DXX labeling so Canon went to XXD labeling.

The 60D also went to SD cards vs CF Cards.

POTN is probably the best Canon forum on the internet, so I would register there and learn from them. Quite a few of them are professional photographers and they post their work as well as tips and tricks.

You can't go wrong with the Canon DLSR but there are alternatives if you need to stick within a budget. A lot revolves around your use of the camera. After years of using a fully decked-out Canon A1 SLR, I went digital about seven years ago with the Fuji S5100. It still does everything I need and didn't break the bank. I spent about two months doing research on the then available cameras within the price range and the S5100 kept coming out on top. There are better, faster and more expensive cameras now but the old girl still keeps up in features and general quality photos.

I'm glad you're interested guys! I think I'm going with the 60D because the only other cameras I have is a Finepix a330 and a JVC video camera. These both take photos, but I've worked out the a330 completely, and the JVC (which I got in November 2011) video camera doesn't have a flash so it's always blurry, even on a tripod. I have also found all the settings on that, but there aren't that many. You know, sometimes when I take a picture I want to change the settings.
Yes, I can't wait for the 60D! :)

Great choice of camera. I'm jealous.

I would recommend you look through some websites or buy a subscription to a photography magazine. The mag is a better choice as you can read it easier. Here in the UK I had a subscription to Digital Photo (fantastic for learning to start with as they have step by step tutorials) and I now have a subscription to Practical Photography (their sister magazine and better for creative ideas). Digital Photography, Digital Cameras & Photographers | Photo Answers. Does ship to Austrailia but at a higher cost (£50). Would highly recommend it though.

I was actually watching YT videos and all that on photography for about 6 months, so as soon as I took it out of the box I nearly knew how everything worked! :D If you search 'gln2d3' on DeviantArt you'll see a few pictures I've taken with it. This camera is really amazing, haha I used the 55-250mm lens and zoomed up to my neighbour's shed, and my backyard is huge.
