I am unable to configure Java Control Panel properly. Specially the "Network Settings" and "Advanced" settings because I don't understand most of what it there. Can you help me here, if unable, direct me to a tutorial or web page somewhere where I can get help.

Thank you,

With Security and Privacy as priority, in the java control panel:

1. What should I choose in 'Network Settings'?

2. In the 'Advanced' tab, what should I choose in the image I have attached?

Thank you

For Network settings you should probably use the default which is "Use browser settings". (unless you're using a proxy server)

For the advanced settings I guess the default settings are shown in the link I posted under section: Figure 18-6 Java Control Panel Advanced Tab, Part 2
Which seems to be all except SSL 2.0
But I would advice to also uncheck SSL 3.0 since that's not secure anymore and have been or will be disabled in all modern browsers. Example: http://www.sevenforums.com/security-news/351006-google-kill-off-ssl-3-0-chrome-40-a.html

Thank you for telling me about the SSL 3.0. I don't understand these things. :o As for the Network Settings, some people seem to think that it is better to deny both, the 'browser' and 'proxy' settings and allow only the 'direct connection' option. That is why I posted here for another opinion.

Kind regards

If you do not use a proxy(most people don't), then the direct connection option is no different from using the browser settings (the default setting).

You can check in Internet Explorer for example: Internet Option, tab "Connections", button LAN settings.
There you can see if a proxy server is defined or not.

In LAN settings, "Automatically detect settings" option is already 'checked', when I opened it. None of the other options are 'checked'.

What does that mean? What is "Local Area Network"?

That's normal. The unchecked proxy box means you're not using a proxy. That's normal too.

If you use a router, the local area network(LAN) means all devices in your home that are connected to the router, your home network. Regardless if it's by Wi-Fi or cable.
