I need to know how NOT to share programs and files between accounts

Okay, so I just got a new laptop for light gaming and the likes and my wife has been using it on a separate account. Next morning when I get my laptop for work, I log on to my account and there is all HER programs on my account.


Any suggestions and help is appreciated.

Thanks, glad to be here. Sadly that did not work. Sorry if I was unclear. This might help. Me and my wife's accounts seem to be linked. Whenever I install something on my account, it installs on her account. Whenever she installs something on her account it installs on my account too.

Did she install new software, and is it that software whose icons are showing up on your desktop? If yes, she might have installed it for all users rather than just me (her). With many installers, all users appears to be the default option (and it's easily missed).

It's possible to move icons from the public desktop and start menu folders to individual users' folders if this bothers you. That way the software will only be visible from specific user accounts. This will avoid having to uninstall and reinstall the programs in question.

Yes she did install new software. I am not sure if she installed them for all users though. Personally, I have never seen that option.

Log in as the user concerned, On the start menu - right Click the all programs option - you will see two entries -

Open All users: these items appear on the start menu of everyone on the system
Open: These items only appear on the start menu for the current logged on user

These are just standard shortcuts and may be moved between areas to set what appears where

As for the desktop you will find these under the Users tree in the system drive, you may need to show hidden folders and or show system files to make the desktop entries visible

Whenever you go through a setup wizard for installing a new program, carefully look for "advanced settings" or similar. If you are asked to choose between typical and custom installs (or similar, again), selecting the custom install should allow you to find the setting to install for the current user only. It just takes a keen eye and a healthy resistance to simply clicking 'Next'.

Thank you for all the replys guys! This is the first time I have had two accounts on one PC , so I had no idea both accounts shared the same programs.

Even a program is installed for all users, the settings of the program will not mixed generally.

Or both of you use only 2 standard accounts, the installation will not effect each other account. But some programs can not be installed (even run) with a standard account. so an administrator account is also needed to be used in that situation.
