I/O device error

I got a 2Tb hard drive connecting it with sata cable it does not show up in my pc but when go to disk management it shows ask to initialized but can't I/O device error pops up
Now if I connect the hard drive through USB it says media is write protect
I used this hard drive as my spare hard drive with all my family pics on it Recovery data does not work any one know anything about this

You know, reading these "text message" type posts is like deciphering a foreign language sometimes

Try this:
With the hard drive connected (internally with a SATA cable I believe that says) :

• Start > type: command > click on Command Prompt
• Type: diskpart and then Enter
• Type: list volume and then Enter
• Type select volume # , where the # is the number of the drive that's giving you the "write-protected" error.
• Type attributes disk clear readonly and press Enter.
• Type exit and press Enter
• Close Command Prompt

This should give you full access to the drive.

You've got this drive hooked up inside a desktop PC, using a standard SATA data cable, and a SATA power connector from the power supply, correct?

When you connect it using USB, can you describe how you do this? (Is it it the external drive casing? Do you have an adapter you are using? etc.)

You could try the diskpart procedure while the drive is connected by USB.
You can also try using the command list disk instead of list volume, although that should not make any difference.

Yep, connect it the way you connected it through USB, answer TVeblen's queries and try diskpart as suggested.

Before trying diskpart, just post a screenshot of the external drive as it appears in Disk Management (when connected through USB). Just an additional info for us.

What did you write protect it with ? ?
Did you try more than 1 SATA data cable when hooking it up internally ? ?
Did you try a different MBoard SATA port ? ?

When the drive does show up via USB right clik it in disk management and select Properties...
