Exactly the same here when it comes to updates; I never let MS take control of my machine without my permission. I use my discretion when it comes to installing updates; i read the explanatory update info, does take a little more effort and time on part of the user but worth it IMO

Be aware that MS spent a fortune building win7 drivers in partnership with all manufacturers so that they could have them in the installer or quickly available by optional Windows Updates. This was done to keep hardware makers from holding out as in Vista so we would be forced to buy new hardware.

So if Win7 installer cannot slip newer drivers in via internet connection - choose "Connect to internet to get latest installer updates" - then you should quickly have the latest in Windows Updates optional choices.

Pick and choose, sure, but I am not finding any bad choices yet after 100+ Win7 installs.

Sounds like you are moving right along.
My question as this point is: Have you installed all of the updates? If no, then do that immediately please. Also be sure and install ALL updates, not only the "critical" updates.

Be sure and make the selection to update other MS products and drivers. Apply all driver updates that MS lists.

Control Panel | Windows Update |
in the left-hand task pane, click on Change Settings |
put a check mark in ALL of the boxes shown|
OK button (don't overlook it. It's at the bottom)

Personally, I prefer to pick and choose. Optional means exactly that...optional. One that I will always opt out on is KB971033. There are others that may cause problems, like installing the driver for onboard sound, when using a sound card.

Finally realized that the (fading) complaints about Updates are XPired oldthink symptoms, with a touch of Vista fever.

Going on 200 WIn7 installs now without a single WUD issue, except maybe one display driver rollback which I sometimes do anyway.

I hate to think that XP oldthinkers are missing out on the billiondy dollars invested in getting the latest drivers into the installer or quickly delivered via optional WUD. But some of them don't even like to hear it.
