Solved I tried enabling hibernate function but no luck

I followed the tutorials here and tried editing the power settings as admin but I'm feeling that I may be missing some options?

I think hibernate is turned on by default.

Did you ever deliberately turn it off?

Yeah and how do I know its turned on by default? Because I only see Shut down, restart, sleep, switch user, lock, log off.

Have you searched your drive for a file called hiberfil.sys? If you can't find it, hibernation is not enabled. I don't have that file. I got rid of it per the tutorial's instructions because I don't use hibernation and wanted to reclaim the drive space it uses.

As far as I know, hibernation is enabled by default when Windows is installed. I'd expect hibernation is enabled on a random PC unless the operator deliberately did something to over-ride the default--and I don't know yet if you ever tried to do that.

Yeah to the second question. And when I type in that file I get a registry file which is what I had to download in step 2 in that tutorial no?

Also how much space does it take up?

If its enabled then why don't I see the option

I think the hiberfil.sys file takes up amount of space equal to 3/4 of your RAM. That would be 6 GB in an 8 GB RAM system.

hiberfil.sys is found in the root of the C drive. Can you navigate to the root of C and see it there?

If you enter "powercfg -h off" at a command prompt, that file should disappear, disabling hibernation.

If you then enter "powercfg -h on" at a command prompt, it should come back and re-enable hibernation.

Since I don't use it, I know little else about it and could only refer you to tutorials.

Does your machine hibernate? That's the test. It does or it doesn't.

That tutorial gives several methods to enable and disable. I'd normally use the first method.

I assume you tried method two, which involves that reg file. Never used it as I did a simple disable via the first method.

To see if you do have a hiberfil.sys file (hibernate enabled) you need to have "Hide protected operating system files..." unchecked in Folder Options / View.

If you have "Allow hybrid sleep" set to ON in Power Options, you won't see Hibernate as an option on the Start button Shutdown options.

Wanted to say thanks as well since because of this thread I was reminded that I wanted to disable the hibernate feature since I never use it, and the file was taking up over 50GB on my SSD...

The link to the tutorial with the command prompt enable/disable guide was useful.
