Hello friends i hope you can help me with my problem.

I wanted to personalize my user folders and ran into a little problem. I dont know how, but i managed to make a folder which ill call Double folder under my User folder. The reason im calling it a Double folder is because it contains everything that is under my User folder. This is how it looks like:

User
--Movies
--Music
--Documents
--Double folder
----Movies
----Music
----Documents
----Contacts
----AppData
--Contacts
--AppData

So everything i delete from the Double folder i also delete from the User folder. It basicly acts as a mirror. I cant rename the Double folder nor change its location (but i can do so for all the other folders).

I tried merging the two folders but it just tells me the source and the destination folders are the same. I cant restore the previous versions or copy things because im out of disk space.

Im using Vista 64-bit, hope someone can help, thanks.

to my assumption you have created a shortcut of your main folder and so whatever you do with the shortcut folder the same effects will apply on the original folder also. are you running out of space after creating the shortcuts? or you are running out of space for some other reason? if you are running out of space due to the shortcuts you created, suggest you delete them right away, keep in mind not to delete the original folder.

HTH

Thanks for replying. Yes, you could call it a "shortcut" but it acts as if it were the folder itself. If i delete any folder under the "Double folder", the same folder gets deleted under the "User folder" also. So i cant delete it.

I am not running out of space because of the Double folder (the User folder and the Double folder are the same size), its just that i dont have enough space disk in general to restore the User folder to a previous version (which could be a solution).

Its really a strange problem.

could you upload a screen shot of your main folder and the double folder? you can also try disk clean up Disk Cleanup - Vista Forums :info:
Information
Disk Cleanup finds and then removes temporary files on your computer that you decide you no longer need to free up hard drive space.

You can also se the difference in the properties of both folders (the location of the double folder cannot be changer nor can the folder name be changed).

Did you use a third party software of some sort? cause if you did, that software would have the option to delete the mirror folder.

What is the reason you made duplicate folders? Maybe we could help with that.
Check your Libraries and what is included in each, then just include the original folder. Don't know if that will help though.

No i didnt use any software, just windows explorer. I made it by renaming an existing folder and changing its location to a folder (Applications) on my other partition. It copied some of the files from the Applications folder to the User folder but i cancelled the process as this was not what i wanted. I moved those files back to the Applications folder on my E: drive and i noticed the "double folder".

Thanks for helping guys, i hope we can resolve this.

Mr. Brink i checked out your tutorial on restoring the users folder. After opening my registry and seeing your screenshot of the /User Shell Folders i found out what the problem might be.

As you can see on my screenshot below, the Value Data for my Value Name {374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B} is %USERPROFILE%. On your screen shot the Value Data for the same Value Name is %USERPROFILE%/Downloads.

my registry -
Untitled-1.jpg

tutorial registry -
20355d1248820171-user-folders-restore-default-location-user_shell_folders_reg.jpg

Do you think that this is causing the linkage between the two folders and would changing the Value Data to %USERPROFILE%/Downloads solve my problem?

Ok so i changed the Value Data to %USERPROFILE%/Downloads and my double folder "Dowload" disappeared from the Desktop\UserName folder. Great.
Now the only problem is, that the UserName folder under the C:\Users\ is not named correctly. It is named as Download and i cant rename it.

This is what my users folder looks like:
C:\Users\Default
C:\Users\Download
C:\Users\Public

The \Download - Appz should be named as my user name (C:\Users\UserNaMe). I suppose there is some way of editing the name in the registry?

I noticed that the path in the adress bar is actually correct. Since everything works okay I'm just going to leave it for now.
