Hello, recently I built my own PC (it's my first time), and I had the i7 4770K, and when I booted it to the BIOS, I noticed that it was pretty hot, about as hot as it should be when it's on full load.

I used the default cooler, and I even switched out the thermal paste, and still nothing has changed.
I have the default 2 fans installed (but I'm waiting for my Corsair case fan to arrive).

Here's my Build

Hi Weegee,

Have you checked the temperatures once in Windows using some software such as Coretemp?

In my experience CPU's always run hotter in the Bios as non of the power saving features are working until you get into Windows.

Right now my Windows 7 is somewhere in the lands of lost UPS items with my fan, so once I get that sorted out get that I'll take a look.

But is it normal for it to be that hot?

Well on a hot day here my 3770k will idle at around 30C maybe a little higher. I have been in the BIOS and the temperature has been 10 to 15C higher.
I don't think you have anything to worry about right now.

I also find temps will drop a few more C as the thermal paste cures.

Wait til you get windows and see your temps before you even think about worrying.

Paul.

Okay thanks, will report in a day or two with some new readings.

EDIT----
I've realized that my one of stock CPU fan's black pins is not completely all the way through. I've tried to push it in, but it's as far as it can go. I've pulled back on the fan to see if it could wiggle loose, but it's firmly in there.
Just wanted you to know

Also I'll get a picture of that as soon as I can

Yeah but not that hot. 49-52 is getting up there.

The OP might want to double check to make sure the CPU cooler and/or thermo paste is properly installed.

BTW I've got a 4770K on a Gigabyte MB (see system specs) and depending on where in the BIOS you go I get from 35 - 40. Of course my CPU cooler is s closed loop water cooler (H100i).

Overall temps core temps are 31 Celsius though (idle).

Anyway check your CPU cooler. BTW what cooler do you have? Never mind. Yeah, that Intel isn't doing you any justice. Get a better cooler, especially with the system you have.

I would get it if I had the money now, but I don't have the money now. I'll have to wait until prob Q3 of this year to get some significant cooling

BTW you don't have to get the H100 lol there are plenty of Closed loop and air coolers out there

In your case i would go with closed water best results Temps vary in the ambient temps of the room cooler the room the better chance it will be cooler as well also need plenty of case ventilation so the PC has constant air flow that is the best way to reduce temps

There are a variety of loops out right now under $100.00 if you are near a Microcenter or Frys that would be the best bet Microcenter has better deals though

I always suggest this one if you want to have a great cooler with a low price range i have one and it's big brother the 920 you can add two fans to this cooler and it will do a great job http://www.microcenter.com/product/391500/KUHLER_H2O_620_Water_Cooling_System

The OP's temps are close to ball park for the oem cooler/fan, there are dozens of aftermarket coolers that are far superior and very affordable.

The OP should be aware of some of the pitfalls of cooling with h2o. Removing the cpu fan causes a increase in temps on the vrm's/nb and may require adding fans to cool that part of the mobo.

ETA: +10 on the 212 EVO. Lot of used ones on evilbay.

That could easily explain why the CPU is/was running hotter than normal.

He did put that he may have secured it a little more in post #6

The stock heatsinks are a bugger to fit though, I had not fitted one for a long time but I had to around a month ago on a build I did for a brother in law with an i5 4670K, it took me ages to get the darn thing on. He was on a budget for the build but I told him as soon as he gets the money to tell me and we will get a better cooler for it.

Yeah, but no news about whether or not his temps dropped.

A very valid point sir!

Which may indicate the issue was solved.

Possibly.
I still don't think the temps (for BIOS) on the stock cooler are not anything out of the ordinary, of course if he actually had Windows installed then it would have shown up a temp issue for sure as the CPU was put under load.
Hopefully he will drop by again soon to let us know if the BIOS temps changed after securing the heatsink properly. They may have but not by much IMHO.

I can tell you my core temps in the BIOS temps are a bit high too, but not that high - they read around 38, whereas desktop temp reading programs like AIDA64 show them much lower....

Haswell temps.JPG

Still, I think 49-52 in the BIOS is a bit high, even for a Haswell chip. And he did state the CPU cooler wasn't fully seated so....

But yeah, only he can clarify if the issue is resolved or not. We're just guessing.
