Icon Association Misbehaving!

This seems like a gigantic bug, but i don't see many others suffering from it, so i don't understand what's up.
Windows 7 x64 seems to loose icon associations to particular software. I'm not talking about those MyDocs, MyPictures etc directories (User Shell folders, are they called?). It started off with Opera- all HTML documents are set to Open With Opera, Opera is the default application for HTML files, they do open with Opera... and yet, the icon an HTML file displays is a blank white page.
I played around in the registry ( How to Change the Icon for a File Type in Windows 7 and Vista), and also tried 3rd party software ("Types") for resetting icon associations. No results, except... In the folder icon of the superfolder that holds my HTML files, the images displayed are the opera icons that i desire. The folder shows that it has Opera documents inside, but when I open the folder, those documents just have blank white icons...

I tried a couple of other things, eventually culminating in my reinstalling Opera. And the icons returned to normal! But now Opera had ALL its defaults, including image files, so when i changed the default application for these files... i lost the icons again.

Now, the same thing's happened to Visual Studio .sln files, though I don't know what triggered it this time.

What's wrong??

Note: regedit shows that the right paths of the icon files are entered under "default icon". Further proven by the fact that i DO see the rihgt icons, but only in the superfolder's icon, as i explained before.
Note 2: It's just the icons that are messed up- HTML files still read "Opera Web Document".

(Hmm. This fella has a similar issue, doesn't he? - Weird Issue)

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, and I know there's other threads on the subject as well, but this problem is driving me absolutely nuts.

No matter what I do, every time I use my Win7x64 build, the file association's icon becomes corrupted for avi/mpg/wmv/etc. files. It only happens for video files, and the actual program association remains in tact. In other words, while in thumbnail preview view mode, all video files show the correct thumbnail preview, and they open with the correct program, but they show the wrong program icon in the lower right corener.

Yeah-- I know, not the end of the world, but this problem persists, even after a complete reformat. Restarting the computer corrects the problem for a short time, as does logging off and on. Also, resetting the program association fixes the problem, but within an hour of "fixing" the problem, the issue returns.

Rebuilding the icon cache doesn't help, and a thorough check of the registry has revealed no problems.

Has anyone identified a specific problem or permanent fix for this nag?

Unfortunately, I've done that previously. I've gone through every post here and at numerous other places looking for some sort of resolution, but I don't think resolution exists. Argh.....
