Icon Issues in Windows 7

I recently installed Windows 7 on my laptop, clean install, so I had to wipe everything from the hard drive and start fresh. Everything works great, functionally, but every time I open the "save as" dialog box to save an item, whether a document, webpage, or picture, the icons are all messed up. The icons for "Desktop" and "Computer" have that standard missing icon image and any subfolder is using an icon that looks like a desktop (computer screen with tower). However, when using Windows Explorer, all of the icons are normal. Its more of an aesthetic problem as everything runs fine, but its really bugging the crap out of me.

In the attached image, the box on the left is using Windows Explorer.

Used the link and tried both methods.

I could not rebuild the icon cache as the IconCache.db file was nowhere to be found in the Local folder. Restarting the computer does not regenerate it either.

As for method #2, that didn't work.

The newly released (today) final version of TuneUp Utilites 2010 which is W7 compatible, has an icon rebuild/repair utility in it. I believe you can download a fully functional free trial of this application and give it a try.

Icon Cache - Rebuild - Vista Forums

Try this...it is for WinVista but it should work the same for 7

Thanks Zidane, I had the same issue after fresh install Windows 7 HP x32, and installation my software. I used solution #2 from your link and now my software again have icons :)
Glad to hear it worked!
It worked only to first reboot, after reboot I got again generic icons for few softwares so first I did tip #1 after that I did tip #2, after reboot now it worked, so in my case I had to do both of them to see results after reboot.

The best method is:
CTRL + SHIFT + ESC
End the Explorer.exe process
Change in the Applications tab
Click New Task and type in cmd.exe.

Don´t close the Windows Task Manager .

In the CMD window,
typing: CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
Enter
Then typing: DEL IconCache.db / and Enter
Now in the Task Manager
Click New Task
type EXPLORER.EXE and press OK.

Now all the icons should be shown correctly.

I wonder, why this issue occurs in RTM version - I don't have any problems with icons in RC build

Could been an external app you have installed that is messing with the iconDB

You're very welcome. (I like TUU along with Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager. They seem to compliment each other pretty well.)
