Icons in Programs/Features

Hey there,

I recently installed Steam and when I went into the programs and Features menu, I found that the default icon was corresponding to the details. I have tried repairing it but nothing happens.

Are there anyway you can manually add the icon on the Programs/Features menu?

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately this method did not work. Are they anyway you can manually add it?

Where did you download steam/ Cnet ?
Did repair but does that include uninstall and re-install ?
When you first downloaded this did it install a shortcut to your desktop/ and did that shortcut have a generic icon or one to reflect the program ?

I downloaded Steam from the official website.
Yeah the repair just does an uninstall/install with the same problem.
Yeah the desktop icon and start menu icons are fine.

Does steam.exe has an icon?

Try this then:
This an example using firefox.exe, but it's the same for any other .exe file.

Navigate to the by right clicking on it's shortcut and clicking on "Open file location".


Once in the folder hit the Alt key on the keyboard, this will pop out the hidden toolbar.
Go to Tools and select Folder options...


Click the View tab and untick the checkbox for Hide extensions for known file types and click OK.


Now you can see the .exe extension for xxxxxx.exe .



With the file selected hit the F2 key on the keyboard (this will allow you to rename the file)
and simply delete the .exe extension and hit Enter on the keyboard.

• (if you get notifications about admin rights or that the file will become unusable, just confirm both dialogue boxes)

Now your file will look like this.



Now simply reverse the process:

• F2 to rename the file.
• Add the .exe extension and hit Enter.
• Go back to Folder options... and retick the checkbox.

I don't know if you have misunderstood my problem but I will post a screenshot.

Notice how the Steam icon is a default one?

I did understand your problem and what I proposed may solve it.
That entry in the Appwiz.cpl gets it's icon from the .exe file its representing.

Have you tried to change the view of the page to details... and refresh the page,
Because it seems to only appear this way in Programs and features/ if that is the case I wouldn't worry about it,
The different icon could just reflect the uninstall tool file associated with the program ?
Start menu list and desktop Icons are fine as you stated earlier.

I know but it is frustrating. I'm sure I saw there were a way to manually select the icon.

just out of interest how often do you go into pros and features to view the icons.

i generally only go in whenever i am uninstalling something and dont really care what the icons look like in there.
if it was on my taskbar it would be a different matter.
