i have a wd caviar ide hdd from an older computer for extra storage. it had to be initialized to use so i put it away and used another one i had. took it back out to use and it doesn't run now. no whining sounds or clicks. it is recognized by disk management and still wants to initialize it but when i click to initialize it says "drive not ready" i think it's dead. motor's not running. i opened the hdd and checked to see if stiction was the cause they moved fine. i have to manually turn the platter and the heads move back and forth but the platter doesn't spin when i power it up. dead motor? chuck it? no hope? thanks. oh, the other hdd runs fine with the same power source and usb hook up so it's not that.
