i used to be able to go into internet temp files for videos i played on-line, like on youtube. if i play them, they went into a folder, from which i could copy and save them. that was on my windows xp computer. i now have w7 and IE10. is there a setting that allows me to do that again? it seems to save some, but not all. I increased the memory size but no go.

thanks.

If you want to save certain videos from utube and such, this Download Videos with RealDownloader will allow you save them, its free and works well. I'm only suggesting this because there are a few posts here and there about the same thing and no real working answers.

It seems to be the flash app that decides which ones can be stored in temp, not IE. And some videos are broken up into segments, so that there is nothing useful in the temp folders.

One of the problems with this downloader (and others) is it only offers to download the video that you are watching and that probably will not be the best resolution video on YouTube. Another problem is RealNetworks only offers a 32bit IE plug in. And yet another problem - the RealDownloader runs all of the time.

Generic advice:
If you are on a 64bit system, then you should use IE10 with 64bit tabs enabled* as that provides for the safest surfing (the best use of ASLR).

*applies to IE11 too

So, what to do?
You can introduce a security risk just to get at these videos at the highest resolution:
Java 64bit and the KeepVid website.

If you only install Java 64bit (and not Java 32bit) please note that it does not come with a tool that checks for updates (jucheck.exe). You would need to manually keep up with that or use a 3rd party app to do so.

If you do install both 32bit and 64bit versions of Java, then the 64bit control panel applet takes over (so no interface to the 32bit update checker). The 32bit update checker still runs each month, but it only handles 32bit updates. You have to manually update the 64bit version or use a 3rd party tool to auto-update both versions.

If you want to change the schedule** of the update checker, you should navigate to
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javacpl.exe"
right click on that and select "run as admin" from the context menu - because the area of the registry that the tool writes the schedule to requires admin rights. But know that the installation of any updates will change the schedule back to defaults.

**Let's say that you opted to use a 3rd party tool to auto-update Java, you might want to turn off the update checker built in to Java 32bit. Each update will turn it back on :-(
