IE 8 as default browser.

Hi.
Running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. Even if set to default browser, the IE8 is not starting up when I click a link.

In the default programs I cannot see IE8. How can I get it there ?

you could browse for it.

press the browse button and navigate to c:\program files\internet explorer for a 32bit system, or c:\program files (x86)\internet explorer for x64 - then select the ieexplorer.exe

I have already set it up via the tools, and as you show it in the screendump.

Instead of "assiciate with..." try the last option "...computer defaults". Choose "custom" and select the browser you want not "my current..."

I don't understand what you mean by "all the same under associate with". Are you saying all file types open with the same program? Which program? If that's the case there is something seriously wrong with the Windows install.

windows 7 (and vista) now stores the default browser in the user portion of the registry, rather than in file associations. see attached. note that for ie the userchoice variable value is IE followed by a dot then the applicable protocol, in the case shown, ftp, so value is IE.ftp, http value is IE.http, https is IE.https.

i use firefox as my default, the value is 'firefoxURL' for all three.

i also note that in your attached file assoc. list that there is no .htm or .html entries, also where did that window in attachment two come from that has the radio buttons for ie and firefox as default? if it is an older program, it might not set the registry correctly.

What the mentioned attachment shows is, if you go into :

ControlPanel=>AllControlPanelItems=>DefaultPrograms and from there:
SetProgramAccessAndComputerDefaults

I tested with Firefox, and it is running ok set as the default browser.
But it was also visible in the Default Programs as IE8 is not.

Association also works for Firefox from my mailing program.

IE8 on Windows 7 needs to be added via "Programs and Features" in the section where you "Turn Windows features on and off". Perhaps that's why it's not visible.

You could try an IE8 reset: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset.

Still the links in my mailer opens Firefox.
IE is set in the registry to IE, and also in the IE8 itself, but still Firefox opens links.
As Firefox opens, I'm told, that it is not the default browser, and that is true .

Un-install Firefox, try again. Does IE8 open by default now? Reinstall Firefox, make sure it doesn't set to default.

I uninstalled Firefox. Did a total clean, and rebooted. Still no associations with IE8.
I did a reset of IE8.
I have a red croos in some of the implied things in reset. Could it be that ?.
Attachments shows after reset, and regedit shows that IE is the deafult browser.
What the heck can be wrong ?
