So my computer froze last night, first time with win7. I had to hit the reset switch on the computer and when it came back to, it had no cookies saved from anything, this was on IE8. Is this normal on win 7? I didnt have this problem on XP and IE 6.

Virus scan found nothing so I know its not that.

Also, I went to system restore the thing and it hasnt automatically saved any restore points. How do I make it auto restore points daily like XP was doing for me? Thanks!

Welcome

Yes reset will send you back to default, everything else will be gone.

System restore schedule is set from task scheduler. Type that phase in search. Then when in task scheduler, expand the tree in the left pane until you see system restore. Make sure that it is on and set for the schedule that pleases you. If you need additional help, just post.

Thanks for the response.

The restore is set up to restore every start up, which would be every morning for me since I shut the computer off each night (its a little noisy in my room). Why would I have no such restores saved? I just manually saved one and it is now there, but now I fear it may disappear later as well. Kind of confused on why its choosing to delete them.

Shut down the computer and boot up. Report back if the restore point is still there.

Hello Dackz, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at the tutorials, at the links below; the first will show you how to add a system restore shortcut to the desktop to be used whenever you need it; also the second (option one, #2) one will show you a shortcut you can add to the "Start Menu, Startup Folder" that will create a restore point whenever you boot the machine.

Boot up like I said. If it is gone there is probably a space problem. We will go into that when you report back.

Reboot...no restore points. I did change my setting from 81meg to 12gig right before hand too. Now what? LOL.

I did run a full scan with Norton 360, the FULL scan, and nothing came up. Im hoping its not something that its not detecting causing there to be no restore points. I know that had happened to me on XP before. I am able to create restore points but upon reboot....bye bye they go.

What is the size of your HD?

Is any of your software, doing an automatic defrag? A defrag of the recovery partition, will erase points.

500 gig with 300 gig free. Not sure if there is anything doing a defrag or not. How would I check? I have backup on Norton 360 turned off....but I had it off on XP and it did not affect restore either.

For back up, which is system restore, system image and backup and restore. 15% is suggested. I think your restore partition if full. There is also a shadow copy which takes up a lot of space. Make your restore partition 15%, 75-80gb and see what happens.

---------- Post added at 04:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:12 PM ----------

Type task scheduler in search. Then look for the defrag schedule. If your a/v and maintenance software is turned off the only defrag schedule is in task scheduler. I no longer thing that is the problem, I think you need to increase the back up partition, as I said.

When I open task scheduler, it says taskBackgroundconfigsurveyor: the task image is corrupt or has been tampered with. Not sure if thats not helping the situation, it lets me into the task scheduler program after I click okay though and I can change settings at will.

I have increased the size...deleted all previous and then created one...will reboot and report back.

It may be malware. Download an use malwarebytes. If you give me a sec. I will get the link. This software will find any problems and it is free.

Here you go.

Another suggestion that has worked in the past with problem restore points is to turn system restore off and the boot up. I usually warn the poster that all points will be lost, but not really a concern here.

Just so you know, we are a long way from the end of the suggetions. We will get this to work.
