IE 8 Officially Becomes World’s Most-Used Browser.

This week, Net Applications released their January browser market share report. Their report shows that Internet Explorer 8 is not only the most popular browser on Windows with 27.9% usage share, but that it now has 25.6% of market share across all OS’s on a worldwide-weighted usage share basis (data provided by Net Applications). We launched just less than a year ago, so it’s both humbling and thrilling to see so many people choose our product so quickly – making it the most popular browser of choice worldwide.

There are many reasons people choose which browser to use. Most people want to know and trust the company behind their browser. And people are looking a browser that protects them – and their privacy online. In an August 13th, 2009 post on the IEBlog, we announced Internet Explorer 8’s SmartScreen Filter had hit over 80 million malware blocks. But that was back in August. As of today, Internet Explorer 8 has done over 350 million malware blocks. You can see Internet Explorer 8’s SmartScreen Filter in action in this blog post. All of your articles are very interesting. As an IE 8, user, I find this article of particular interest. It appears to me that those that use alternative browsers are more vocal than those that use IE 8. Based upon the posts in this form, I thought that other browsers were, by far, most popular. I am glad to discover that other, and many of them, feel that IE 8, for various reasons, is the best choice. Take Care.

Hi Bowtie, your comment is correct. I have been using it since Windows 98. I used FF only for a short period, with Windows 98, because for some reason it began to run real slow. About 6 months later is began to work properly and I went back to IE.

I decided to actually check out IE8 a few weeks ago (3 weeks ago I think it was), and actually liked it.
Been using it ever since.

I thought IE6 was the most used. You see that dinosaur everywhere from Libraries and Schools to Business PCs.

But, I am glad to hear from my frequently visited blogs that Microsoft is encouraging people to upgrade.

Not quite - but unfortunately, sadly, and dangerously, IE6 is #2 as seen in this Netmarketshare graph on Browser Version Market Share.

I can only hope these IE6 holdouts are on a well managed corporate network. If not, then these IE6 users are irresponsible Internet users. It is bad enough they are a threat to themselves, but folks who fail to "practice safe computing" - that is, they fail to keep their systems fully updated, patched, scanned, and blocked - expose their systems to compromise and exploitation by bad guys, who then, in turn, use those corrupt systems against the rest of us.

IE8 is a HUGE security improvement of IE6, and offers significant improvements over IE7. All IE users, even if using an alternative as their default, should be running IE8.
